
Vipers Edge Flyers For Second Straight Night

CALGARY, Alberta - For the second straight night, Orange County had the tying run in scoring position in the ninth but couldn't bring him home. Calgary reliever Rene Miniel induced a ground ball from Steve Boggs for the final out of the game, preserving a 3-2 Vipers win over the Flyers.
Orange County trailed, 3-1, going into the ninth inning. Keith Ginter drew a walk to lead off the final frame, and Miniel struck out the next two batters. Ginter advanced to third on Jim Goethalss single to left field, and pinch hitter Sergio Pedroza drove in Ginter with the a single up to the middle on the first pitch he saw, brining the Flyers within one run before Boggs' ground out.
Calgary starter Erik Dessau gave the Vipers seven strong innings for the win. After giving up a run in the first, he faced the minimum 12 batters through the next four innings. Dessau (2-0) finished the night allowing one run on seven hits while striking out four batters.
The Flyers struck first stringing three hits together in the first inning. Right fielder Ben Johnson's single scored Jimmy Rohan for the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Vipers centerfielder Julio Ramirez tied the game with a solo homerun off Brett Smith. In the fourth, the Vipers led off the inning with three hits before pitcher Erik Dessau's sac fly scored one run, and Guillermo's RBI single made it 3-1 Calgary.
Orange County had a chance to get back into the game in the eighth inning after back-to-back walks by Calgary reliever Daniel Chaffardet, but Brian Oliver came in to deal a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
The Flyers continue this five-game series in Calgary on Saturday as former NL All-Star Byung-Hyun Kim takes the mound for the Flyers in his third start of the year. First pitch is at 6:05pm Pacific, and the game can be heard live online through www.OrangeCountyFlyers.com.
