Edmonton Capitals News Release

Not much could damper the spirits of Capitals fans on Bryan Hall Luau Night. The colourful radio broadcaster sporting his equally colourful Hawaiian shirt was on hand to mingle with the crowd for a mini-doubleheader at TELUS Field. The Caps picked up where they left off in the previously suspended game converting their 4 - 0 lead into a 6 - 1 victory. A good portion of the crowd were wearing their Hawaiian shirts for a chance to win a trip for two to Maui to watch the Capitals play. Larry Marushy of Edmonton was the lucky winner of the contest in a night that included a pig roast, hula hoop and limbo contests and a whole lot of fun.

The second half of the doubleheader was entertaining as well with the pitchers putting on a show. In the end, Maui Na Koa Ikaika exploded for five runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull out a 6 - 2 victory.

"It was like a National League game out there tonight", said Capitals Director of Baseball Operations Gord Gerlach. "It was a true pitcher's duel and was anybody's game heading into the extra inning. Both Caps pitcher Alexander Francisco and Na Koa Ikaika hurler Wes Etheridge were superb. The score is deceiving. We played some great ball tonight and will have a chance to win the series Friday."

Maui jumped out to a 1 - 0 lead but the Caps answered back to make it 1 - 1 through a couple of innings. It was a pitching duel from that point on as both starters never got into any real trouble. Edmonton starter Alexander Francisco pitched well through the middle innings of the game, retiring ten straight batters at one point before leaving at the end of the sixth.

While the starters shone, relievers for both teams struggled. Chad Blackwell came on in relief and pitched a scoreless seventh before Maui touched up the Capitals hurler for five runs in the eighth. The Caps came back and loaded the bases on two separate occasions in the bottom half of the inning but only came away with one run.

Edmonton's record is now 5 - 8. Despite the loss, the Caps still have a 2-1 lead in the series with two games left to go. The teams will meet up again for Safeway Fireworks Friday and Salute To Baldness Night which also happens to be an EZ Rock Saturday Night movie featuring the original Shrek.

The Edmonton Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Capitals season seats start at under $9 per game and individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, at (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
