Tucson Toros News Release
The Tucson Toros completed a sweep of the Victoria Seals with 4-3 walkoff victory in the 11th inning Thursday night. Tucson was just an out away from a win in regulation, but two unearned runs with two outs in the top of the 9th forced extras.
Tucson led 3-1 in the 9th but a costly error by Lino Garcia prolonged the contest. With a the Seals' Sean Smith at first base, Second Baseman Wilver Perez hit a single to left that got under Garcia's glove allowing both runners to come around to score, tying the game at 3-3.
Garcia would atone for his mistake in extras, leading off the bottom of the 11th with a hard hit single to right. Lino stole second, prompting Victoria to intentionally walk lefthanded hitter Wally Backman Jr. to get to the righty Cristobal Santana. Santana would make them pay, serving a linedrive single to center scoring Garcia and winning the game.
Lost in the bonus baseball was a stellar outing by Tucson starter Matt Lincoln, who dealt for 8 strong innings allowing a run on just 2 hits while striking out 6 to lower his ERA to 2.41. Reliever Andrew Snowdon held the Seals scoreless during the 10th and 11th innings to earn his first professional victory and improve to 1-1 this season.
Santana finished with 4 hits, joined by Jose Valdez who finished just a home run short of the cycle. Valdez had a single, double and triple all within the first 4 innings of the game, and added another single in the 10th. Victor Ferrante's 11 game hit streak came to an end with an 0-for-5 performance, but he drew a walk in the 1st inning to extended his on-base streak to 12 games. The Toros loaded the bases 3 times in the game and escaped with the win despite stranding 16 total baserunners.
The win was the 3rd in a row for the Tucson, raising the record to 6-7.
The Toros will travel to St. George, Utah on Friday where they will play three games in two days against the Roadrunners. Tucson's next homestand will begin with a Fireworks Friday on June 11th.
