EDINBURG, Texas - On Friday night the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (6-17) fell 101-93 to the Northern Arizona Suns (4-16) at Bert Ogden Arena.
The Suns quickly took the lead in the first quarter, but the Vipers were not far behind. With nine minutes remaining in the quarter, Houston Rockets two-way player Michael Frazier tied the game 10-10. RGV then pulled away and took a 22-16 lead, but NAZ wanted back its lead. Northern Arizona went on a 13-point run and took the lead from the Vipers to end the first quarter 29-24.
NAZ led throughout the second quarter and kept a 50-46 lead going into halftime.
At halftime, Phoenix Suns assignee Jalen Lecque led NAZ in points scored with 10. Norense Odiase led the team in rebounds with nine. Jaron Blossomgame led the Vipers with 10 points and six rebounds. Frazier and Brandon Sampson tied the half with nine points each.
The court was a battlefield in the third quarter as both teams fought to take the lead. Northern Arizona led for most of the quarter until two minutes remained on the clock. At that time Blossomgame stepped up and gave the Vipers a 73-72 lead. As the clock reached zero, the Vipers now controlled the game 78-74.
In the fourth quarter things began to get heated between both teams. It was a back and forth battle for the win as the scoreboard reached 84-84. NAZ grabbed back its lead with a score of 86-84, but Sampson would score a three pointer to grasp the lead once again.
Northern Arizona was not about to give up. With four minutes remaining in the final quarter the Suns took back a 91-89 lead. NAZ managed to maintain its lead and won the game 101-93.
Sampson led the night with 24 points, three rebounds and two assists. Blossomgame reached a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Ray Spalding tallied up 11 points and six rebounds followed by Kerwin Roach II with a total of 11 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Seven players of Northern Arizona reached double digits in scoring; Tariq Owens (18 points and nine rebounds), Lecque (12 points, three rebounds and three assists), ShawnDre Jones (12 points, four rebounds and six assists), Daxter Miles Jr. (12 points and three rebounds), Anthony Lawrence (11 points, eight rebounds and six assists), Trayvon Palmer (11 points and nine rebounds) and Odiase (10 points, 11 rebounds and two assists).
