March 10, 2006 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release
ROANOKE, VA - The Vipers showed more signs of life than they have in weeks Friday night as they did battle on home ice against their in-state division rival the Richmond RiverDogs, but Todd Grant scored with less than three minutes remaining in the third period to break the 2-2 tie and ultimately win the game for Richmond by a final score of 4-2.
Matt Miller scored first for the Vipers, getting Roanoke Valley's momentum going early at the 6:44 mark of the first period. Jan Jas and Mike Krelove were credited with the assists on the goal. Richmond's Mike Oliveira answered with two straight at 8:31 of the first period and 3:31 of the second period. Miller responded with his second goal of the night, also assisted by Jas and Krelove at 2:39 of the third period to start the final period of play. Glenn Ridler, making his UHL and Vipers debut, kept his team in it until only 2:40 was left on the clock, when Todd Grant snuck one past his outstretched glove to steal the lead for the RiverDogs.
Oliveira added a fourth goal for Richmond for the hat trick with an empty-netter at 19:39. The two teams, which became extremely physical with each other at several points during the game, will face off once again on Saturday night at 7:35p.m. back at the Roanoke Civic Center.
Saturday night will be Jersey Retirement Night as the Vipers honor current head coach and former Roanoke and NHL hockey player Daniel Berthiaume and former Salem Rebel and Philadelphia Flyer Dave "The Hammer" Schultz. Then join the Vipers for a Sunday afternoon matchup against the Rockford Ice Hogs and stick around after the game for a special jersey auction and the third annual Guns and Hoses Charity Hockey game. Tickets are just $5.00 in the goal and center ice sections on Sunday, so bring all your friends and family out for all of the action and excitement! Call (540) 345-PUCK (7825) to get your tickets for both Saturday and Sunday...don't wait, call now!
