
Vipers Defeat Texas Legends 115-109

HIDALGO, Texas - Robert Covington led the Rio Grande Valley Vipers to a 115-109 win over the Texas Legends with 33 points, 10 rebounds and four steals tonight at State Farm Arena.
In addition to Covington, Tim Ohlbrecht scored a season-high 26 points, followed by Troy Daniels with 17 points. Kevin Parrom added 12 points, and Gary Talton scored 10 points and 21 assists. The NBA Development League record for assists is 22 dating to back 2007.
Devin Ebanks led the Legends with 30 points, followed by Marcus Hubbard with a double-double 28 points, 17 rebounds. Terrel Harris added 16 points, 11 rebounds. Mickey McConnell scored 14 points, and Melvin Ely added a double-double 12 points, 10 rebounds.
Ebanks scored the first basket of the night for the Legends with a jump shot. Covington put the Vipers on the board with two free throws. Ebanks responded with another jump shot to put Texas ahead 4-2. Akeem Ellis, who made his first start of the season, responded with a shot from behind the arc to take the 5-4 lead. The Vipers remained in the lead throughout the rest of the first half. RGV's largest advantage of the first half was by 10 points, 20-10, courtesy of a layup by Ohlbrecht.
Midway through the second quarter, Ebanks connected on a jump shot that closed the Legends deficit to 34-33. The Vipers responded with back-to-back three-point shots, from Covington and Talton. At the half, the Vipers led 55-49.
The Legends came back fighting for the lead in the third quarter. Ebanks tied the game at 62 points at the 7:20 mark on a shot from the free throw line. Ebanks and Hubbard connected on shots that gave Texas their largest lead of three points, 66-63. A three-pointer from Daniels with 4:31 on the clock tied the game at 73 points. Tony Bishop followed with a dunk to put the Vipers ahead 75-73. At the end of the third quarter, the Vipers led 89-78.
A three-pointer from Daniels gave the Vipers their largest advantage of the game 92-78 at the start of the fourth quarter. The Legends inched their way back throughout the quarter and tied the game at 109 points with 1:19 remaining in the game. Parrom and Ohlbrecht each connected on lay-ups. Then, Parrom and Talton each sank a free throw to help the Vipers win the game 115-109.
The Vipers will host two games at State Farm Arena next week. On Monday, Jan. 19, RGV will host the Austin Toros and on Wednesday, Jan. 21, the Idaho Stampede will be in town.
