Springfield Armor News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Led by Adonis Thomas and Justin Johnson, the Springfield Armor (6-14) knocked off the Canton Charge (12-8) by a final score of 110-103 after rallying from six down to start the fourth quarter Friday night at the MassMutual Center.
Hot shooting sparked the Charge to start the game, connecting on 72.7 percent of their shots at the halfway point of the opening frame which built the Canton lead to six at 19-13. The Charge's advantage would reach as high as eight, but Springfield fought back with a pair of late treys from Thomas along with five straight points from Larry Anderson to close the period to take a 28-27 edge into the second quarter.
The tight-knit game saw five lead changes in the second quarter, but the Charge were able to grab a seven-point advantage heading into the locker room. After Springfield clawed within three with 45 seconds to play, Canton rattled off four straight points to close the half and take a 57-50 edge into the break.
Thomas led the Armor with 10 points through the first half, hitting 4-of-7 shots from the field, including a 2-of-4 effort from beyond the arc with both treys coming on back-to-back possessions. Larry Anderson and Willie Reed added eight points apiece off the bench for Springfield as the Armor shot 43.9 percent (18-of-41) from the floor and missed just two attempts from the charity stripe (11-of-13).
Canton put three players in double figures after 24 minutes, led by Kevin Jones' 11 as the Charge's leading scorer entering the night shot 5-of-9 from the field and knocked down his only free throw attempt. Canton outscored the Armor 34-18 in the paint and 9-8 on second chance points, but Springfield was on the run, holding a 14-10 advantage in fast break points.
Five minutes into the third, the Armor tied the game at 67, but a late Canton run left Springfield trailing by six entering the final frame. Canton cleaned up with nine second chance points in the period, outrebounding the Armor 9-6 and 3-2 on the offensive glass.
With Canton ahead 82-76 to start the fourth, Springfield climbed its way back to pull within just one with six minutes to play courtesy of six fourth-quarter points from seven-foot center Jeff Foote. After tying the game at 93 apiece with five minutes remaining, the Armor closed out the game on a 17-10 run to secure the team's second straight home victory and first of the season over Canton. Justin Johnson scored 11 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, including the game-tying shot with 1:48 left.
Thomas finished with a game-high 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting to go along with six boards and a pair of steals. Reed added 14 off the bench, while Anderson, Foote and Horner all ended with 12 points. Seven Springfield members reached double figures on the night as the team shot 50.6 percent (41-of-81) from the field and hit 23-of-30 shots from the foul line.
Jones paced the Canton offense with 20 points, while Gilbert Brown and Cavaliers assignee Carrick Felix finished with 19 apiece. The Charge were outscored 34-21 in the fourth and managed just five rebounds in the final frame.
