
Vipers Cruise Past Austin 136-133

HIDALGO, Texas, January 20, 2014 - Troy Daniels led the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (17-5) with 34 points to cruise past the Austin Toros (9-11) 136-133 tonight at State Farm Arena.
In addition to Daniels, the Vipers were led by Tim Ohlbrecht with a double-double 19 points, 12 rebounds. Houston Rockets assignee Isaiah Canaan also added 19 points. Tony Bishop, Jr. scored 18 points, followed by Gary Talton with 16 points.
Courtney Fells led the Toros with 26 points, followed by Josh Howard with 25 points. Charlie Westbrook scored 15 points.
Troy Daniels started the game with a three-point shot to put the Vipers up 3-0. Fells responded with a shot from behind the arc to tie the game, followed by a dunk to give the Toros a 5-3 lead. Austin held their largest lead of the game 37-30 with a minute remaining in the first quarter. At the end of the first, the Toros led 39-33.
Talton put the Vipers back in the lead 50-49 with two free throws at 7:07 in the second quarter. Ohlbrecht followed with a layup, and Fells connected on a three-pointer to tie the game at 52 points. A shot from behind the arc by Talton gave the Vipers the lead 55-52. At the half, the RGV led 78-69.
The Vipers held on to the lead through most of the third quarter. With 2:45 on the clock. Westbrook connected on back-to-back layups that tied the game at 99 points. Canaan sank two free throws and Bishop made a layup to give the Vipers a 103-99 advantage. However, Austin finished the quarter with a 5-0 run that put the Toros up 104-103 at the end of the third quarter.
The start of the fourth quarter was a battle as both teams fought for the lead. Daniels sank three free throws to give the Vipers a 115-114 advantage with 9:05 on the clock. RGV built its lead to 124-116, courtesy of a three-pointer by Gary Talton. However, Austin followed with a 12-4 run to tie the game at 128 points with 2:21 remaining. The Vipers used layups from Ohlbrecht and Daniels, along with shots at the line to claim the game 136-133.
The Vipers will play three more games this week. First, RGV hosts the Idaho Stampede Wednesday, Jan. 22, 7 p.m. (CT) at State Farm Arena. Then, the Vipers hit the road for a 7 p.m. (CT) contest at Texas Friday, Jan. 24. Saturday, Jan. 25, the Vipers are back at home when they host Austin at 7 p.m. (CT) at State Farm Arena.
