D-Fenders Fail to Hold off the Bighorns

EL SEGUNDO - The Los Angeles D-Fenders were defeated by the Reno Bighorns 123-111 on Monday afternoon at the Toyota Sports Center.

In the first quarter, the D-Fenders (11-10) fell behind by 14 points early to the Bighorns (13-10), allowing Reno to knock down nine of their first 12 attempts from the field. Los Angeles would get the deficit down to three points late in the period before Reno eventually carried an eight-point edge into the second quarter. In the second period, Los Angeles solidified their defense and forced Reno into seven turnovers leading to a three-point halftime advantage for the D-Fenders. In total, Los Angeles shot 40.4 percent from the field and tallied 20 second chance points off of 13 offensive rebounds in the first half.

Los Angeles struggled to hold off the Bighorns early in the third frame and found themselves trailing by 16 points with three minutes to play in the quarter. The D-Fenders rallied back to the tune of a 15-4 run to pull within five points entering the final twelve minutes of play. The Los Angeles defense faltered down the stretch and Reno shot 57.1 percent from the field in the final period to eventually claim the victory.

Leading all scorers, James Southerland finished with 24 points and six rebounds to head the D-Fenders attack. Terrence Williams (21 points, eight rebounds, seven assists), Brandon Costner (19 points, seven rebounds), C.J. Williams (17 points, nine rebounds) and Josiah Turner (10 points) also finished in double-digits for Los Angeles. Travis Hyman also pitched in three blocks and three steals off of the bench.

All five starters, DeQuan Jones (23 points, nine rebounds), Sacramento Kings assignment players Ray McCallum (20 points, seven assists), Tyrell Biggs (18 points), Trent Lockett (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Mickell Gladness (14 points, eight rebounds) finished in double-digits for Reno. Brandon Heath (10 points, 10 assists, nine rebounds) and Bryan Davis (10 points, eight rebounds) also performed well off the bench for the Bighorns.

Overall, the D-Fenders attempted 13 more shots than Reno, but only converted 42.0 percent of those attempts. In turn, Los Angeles allowed the Bighorns to shoot an opponent season-high 57.5 percent from the field. The D-Fenders did manage to protect the ball though, turning it over only nine times, which ties a season-low for the team.

The D-Fenders will head back on the road to take on the Reno Bighorns once again on January 24th, at 7:00pm, at the Reno Events Center, in Reno, Nevada.
