Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers improved to 9-10 on the year with their second straight victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes, Wednesday afternoon at Foothills Stadium. Calgary took advantage of another strong outing by the pitching staff and picked up a 3-2 victory.

Starter Frank James (0-1) worked six complete innings and gave up just one run on seven hits, he also struck out two batters but was not involved in the decision as Winnipeg starter Chad Scarbery was equally as impressive, giving up two runs on nine hits in seven innings.

Jon Huizinga (2-0) earned the win thanks to bottom of the ninth heroics courtesy of Carlos Duncan. With the score knotted at 2-2, Duncan hit a two-out, pinch-hit RBI single down the right-field line to lift the Vipers to victory.

Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning when Nelson Castro singled off Scarbery with two-out in the inning. Manabu Kuramochi followed with a walk before Josh Carter drilled an RBI single that scored Castro and made it 1-0.

Winnipeg evened it in the top of the sixth when Jimmy Hurst doubled off James and was brought in to score on a Keith Maxwell single.

The Vipers took the lead right back in the bottom of the sixth with a single by Drew Miller to lead off the inning and a double by Adam Shorsher that scored Miller to make it 2-1.

Sean Walsh then made it 2-2 in the top of the seventh with his second homerun of the year, a solo shot off Clint Hosford, who took over for James to start the inning.

Both teams went scoreless in the eighth inning, setting up the ninth inning drama. Shaun Ashman was scheduled to bat in the ninth after coming into the game earlier as a pinch-runner for Jason Colson. Manager Mike Busch though, made the switch to Duncan, a decision that paid off in the end.

Calgary's defense was solid in the game, turning three double plays to keep the Goldeyes' offense in check.

The final game of the four-game series between Calgary and Winnipeg will take place Thursday afternoon at 1:35 PM. Calgary will look to win the series and move back to the .500 mark on the year.
