
Vipers Come From Behind Again

For a second straight night the Calgary Vipers trailed heading into the seventh inning only to rally and defeat the Edmonton Capitals 11-8 before 1681 fans at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. In a game delayed 47 minutes due to rain the Vipers fell behind 5-0 after one inning and trailed 6-2 into the seventh frame when they scored four times to tie the game before scoring four more times in the eighth to go ahead for good. In the two four-run frames for the Snakes six of the tallies were knocked in with two-out hits. With the victory the Vipers are 18-8 in the second half to lead the Capitals by five and a half games in the North Division. Overall the Snakes are 44-21 for the top record in the Golden Baseball League.
At the plate the Vipers were led by Drew Miller who went three-for-three with four runs scored, two walks, and a home run.
Erik Dessau (8-3) made his first appearance out of the bullpen this season tossing two scoreless innings while allowing one hit for the victory. With the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning Mac Suzuki (9) entered and struck out the only batter he faced for the save. Trevor Caughey (2-6) took the loss in giving up four runs on six hits in one inning of work.
The defensive play of the game was made in the fourth inning as Calgary right fielder Sergio Pedroza took a shot off the wall and threw it right on the money in the air to second base to nail the speedy Edmonton leadoff batter Jorge Cortes.
Edmonton took a early big lead in the bottom of the first inning as Cortes doubled, Darryl Brinkley walked, Joey Gomes plated a run with a single, Chad Ehrnsberger also walked to load the bases, Carlos Duncan cashed a run with a base hit, Joe Jiannetti picked up a run batted in when he reached on an error which also allowed Ehrnsberger to score, and Matt Ceriani collected a RBI base knock for the 5-0 advantage.
Calgary got a run back in the third as Miller walked, Fehlandt Lentini and Nelson Castro both singled to load the bases, and Jorge Mejia drove in a run when reaching on a fielder's choice for a 5-1 score.
Another run was scored by the Vipers an inning later as Pedroza and Rick Guarno both walked, and Miller picked up a RBI base knock for a 5-2 game.
The Capitals got back on the scoreboard in the home half of the fifth as Brinkley, Gomes, and Ehrnsberger all singled to load the bases and a run scored when Duncan hit into a double-play for a 6-2 lead.
Miller continued his great night in the seventh inning as he led off with his 11th home run of the season. Caonabo Cosme followed with a walk, Jorge Mejia collected a two-out base hit, Kit Pellow drove in two with a clutch double, and Pedroza also clutched up with two outs delivering a RBI single for a tie game at 6-6.
The Snakes took their first lead of the game in the top of the eighth as Rick Guarno singled, Miller doubled, Lentini was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Castro plated a run with a sacrifice fly. With two outs Mejia, Pellow, and Pedroza all delivered clutch RBI base hits for a 10-6 advantage.
A run was added to the Calgary lead in the ninth inning as Miller walked, Cosme singled, and Lentini hit a RBI sacrifice fly for a 11-6 score.
In the bottom of the ninth frame Gomes and Mitch Graham both singled and scored on a Aaron Hornostaj two-run double for a 11-8 final.
On Wednesday August 19th at 7:00 PM MDT the Vipers continue this series and the four-game-set with the Capitals will conclude on Thursday August 20th at 12:00 PM. Isaac Hess (9-2, 3.86) and Joe Sergent (6-3, 3.78) will start the two games for Calgary.
The Snakes then travel to Victoria for a three game series against the Seals on Friday August 21st, Saturday August 22nd both at 8:05 PM MDT, and Sunday August 23rd at 2:35 PM MDT.
Calgary returns home to Foothills Stadium on Tuesday August 25th, Wednesday August 26th, and Thursday August 27th all at 7:05 PM MDT for their final regular season home games of the season with the Edmonton Capitals in town. Tuesday will be "Toque Night" where Vipers' toques will be handed out at the game while on Wednesday it will be "Grey Eagle Casino Night" at the ballpark.
For the third straight year the Vipers have qualified for the playoffs and will host Game 3 of the North Division Championship Series on Friday September 4th at 7:05 PM MDT. If necessary Games 4 & 5 will be held on Saturday September 5th at 4:00 PM MDT and Sunday September 6th at 3:00 PM MDT also at Foothills Stadium.
