St. George RoadRunners News Release
LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA - The St. George RoadRunners lost only their second Tuesday game of the 2009 season falling late to the host Long Beach Armada 13-11 at Blair Field. The Fleet scored in six of eight possible innings to stymie any possible St. George comebacks.
St. George fell to 16-14 in the Golden League's 2nd half, 41-29 overall. Long Beach keeps hope alive improving to 12-14 in the 2nd half (32-32 overall).
A.J. Valentine clubbed a monster grand slam homer in the six-run second inning and finished the night 3-for-5 with 5 runs batted in. Rookie Chase Leavitt knocked four singles and Gary Harris had three hits including a double from the lead-off spot. St. George totaled 17 hits, but it was not enough against Long Beach.
The Armada used a trio of three-run innings, a two-run frame and a pair of single-run episodes.
Late in the game, the Fleet got the clutch hits when the RoadRunners faltered. Omar Bramasco's double sending home Jon Kaplan in the eighth proved to the game winner off Mike Martin (1-1). Catcher Andy Bouchie added an insurance run in the eighth with a towering home run to straight away center.
Rusty Jones (3) surrendered a pair of hits but notched the save in support of LB reliever Scott Watson (1-0).
Game two of the three-game series is Wednesday night at 8:05pm Mountain. St. George will send Justin Abbott (1-4, 7.85 ERA) to the hill against former Dixie State Rebel Ben Fox (5-6, 3.53 ERA).
