Caps Snake-Bitten After Early Surge, Late Rally
August 19, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - Tuesday night's game between the Capitals and Calgary Vipers at TELUS Field was delayed by approximately an hour as an evening storm passed. Following the delay, the Capitals picked up on offense where the teams left off in Monday's slug-fest with a five-run first inning, but could not sustain the pressure as the Vipers held on for the win, 11-8.
The Caps managed to get the potential tying run to the plate during a bottom of the ninth rally that saw them score twice to narrow the Viper lead to three. That would be as close as the score would get, though, as a pair of Calgary four-run innings in the seventh and eighth proved to be too much to overcome.
For the second night in a row, Viper leadoff batter Fehlandt Lentini was the catalyst in his lineup going 2-3 with two runs-batted-in and a run scored. Jorge Mejia and Drew Miller each had three hits for Calgary. Miller also scored four runs and plated himself in the seventh inning with a home run.
Joey Gomes led the Capitals at the plate with a 3-5 night that included two runs scored and an RBI. Jorge Cortes, Chad Ehrnsberger and Mitch Graham each had two hits. Aaron Hornostaj and Joe Jiannetti drove in a pair of runs for the home club.
The Capitals will attempt to bounce back against the Vipers on Wiener Wednesday and take the first step in attempting to split the four game series at TELUS Field. Fans showing up to Thursday's 12:00pm game wearing a Bikini top will have their ticket covered by Terry, Bill & Steve of K-97 - Edmonton's Classic Rock. Sample bottles of sunscreen will also be given out courtesy of Rexall.
Tickets for all Caps home games are available at the Capitals TELUS Field Box Office, any TicketMaster location, by calling 780-414-GOAL (4625) or by visiting CapsBaseball.ca.
