August 13, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers plated seven runs in the seventh inning to complete a five-run comeback on their way to defeating the Victoria Seals 10-8 at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria, British Columbia. The Vipers trailed 6-1 after four innings and the bullpen took over from their allowing the offense to score a run in the fifth and then send 13 batters to the plate in the seventh to take the lead for good. With the victory the Snakes swept the Seals and have won three straight games. Calgary's record improves to 14-7 in the second half for at least a three game first place lead while their 40-20 overall record is the top mark in the Golden Baseball League.

Brian Oliver (1-0) posted his second straight excellent outing from the bullpen as he went a scoreless and hitless two and a third innings while striking out one for his first professional victory. Travis Hughes was also solid for Calgary coming into the game with a one run lead in the seventh and retiring the two batters he faced while Pete Sikaras had a fantastic one-two-three eighth inning with two strikeouts. Mac Suzuki (7) recorded the save in posting a three-up, three-down ninth inning with one strikeout. Isaac Hess (9-2) took the rare loss in giving up nine runs in his six and a third innings.

Colin Moro led the way offensively for the Snakes driving in three runs including the tying and go-ahead tallies while also scoring twice. Fehlandt Lentini and Rick Guarno both collected three hits and are now tied for the league lead in doubles with 25 each.

Victoria opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as Bret Levier singled, stole second base, and with two outs scored for a 1-0 lead when Billy Krause reached on a throwing error.

Calgary tied the game at 1-1 in the next half inning as Rick Guarno doubled, Drew Miller productively grounded out to advance him to third, and Guarno scored on a Kevin Price run batted in sacrifice fly.

The Seals retook the lead in the bottom of the third as Sergio Pedroza doubled, Jamar Hill was hit by a pitch, both advanced on a balk, Pedroza scored on a Josh Arhart RBI groundout when shortstop Nelson Castro robbed him of a base hit with a diving play, and with two outs Brett Flowers cashed a second run with a single for a 3-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the fourth frame Victoria continued their scoring as Matt Kavanaugh and Billy Krause singled, and with two outs a costly fielding error allowed Hill to reach and one run to score, Arhart followed by driving in two more unearned runs with a base hit for a 6-1 lead.

Kevin Price slugged his first home run of the season for the Vipers in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 6-2.

The Calgary bats came alive in the visitor's half of the seventh as Caonabo Cosme reached on an error, Guarno walked, and Drew Miller knocked in two with a smash double. Price followed by walking, Fehlandt Lentini doubled in one, and Castro was intentionally walked to load the bases. With the Snakes within one run Colin Moro cleared the sacks with a three-run triple to put his team ahead and Cosme capped the inning with a RBI single for a 9-6 advantage.

Right back responded the Seals in the bottom of the frame as Arhart doubled, Petie Montero reached on a bunt single, Flowers plated a run with a sacrifice fly, and Levier singled home another tally for a 9-8 score.

In the top of the ninth inning the Snakes added an insurance run for a 10-8 lead as Moro singled and scored on a Guarno RBI double.
