Seals Swept by Vipers

Victoria, BC - Hoping to avoid being swept for the first time all season at Royal Athletic Park, the Victoria Seals returned to home turf for game three against the Calgary Vipers on Thursday afternoon. With the visitors handing the ball to Dallas Mahan (2-3), the Seals looked to their ace Isaac Hess (9-1) in the series finale.

Jumping on the board in the bottom of the second inning, Victoria got a one-out single from Bret Levier, before the runner scored for a 1-0 lead when Billy Krause reached on a throwing error. The Vipers responded to tie the game 1-1 in the next half inning, though, using a double off the bat of Rick Guarno to set up a sacrifice fly from Kevin Price to even things up.

Rallying for the lead again in the third, the Seals picked up a lead-off double from Sergio Pedroza, along with a hit-by-pitch to Jamar Hill before both advanced on a balk, and one scored despite a highlight reel diving stab from Nelson Castro on a hard-hit ball from Josh Arhart. Then, a base hit courtesy of Brett Flowers cashed the second run to put the home side up by two, a 3-1 score.

Victoria stretched their lead once more in the bottom of the fourth when both Matt Kavanaugh and Billy Krause picked up base htis, and an error to Jorge Meija plated one at put runners on second and third. With two outs in the frame, Arhart notched another pair of RBI's with a single to propel the Seals to a 6-1 lead. Earning one back in the fifth, Kevin Price lifted his first home run of the season off the scoreboard in left to pull the Vipers with four runs.

The visitors would surge ahead for good in the seventh, though, started by a lead-off error to send Caonabo Cosme to first, before Guarno drew a walk, and Drew Miller knocked in two with a double to the gap. The next batter, Price, then drew another followed by walk, to set up an RBI double from Fehlandt Lentini, and another walk to intentionally load the bases without an out in the frame, and the Vipers down by just one. Clearing the bases with a three-run triple three pitches later, Colin Moro to put Calgary up by two and Cosme finished off the frame with an RBI single for seven-run inning and a 9-6 lead..

Grabbing two runs back in the bottom of the seventh, the Seals used a lead-off double from Arhart, before Petie Montero reached on an infield base hit and Flowers scored a run with a sacrifice fly. Finding some momentum and clawing back within one of the Vipers, Levier singled home another run for a 9-8 score through eight innings.

In the top of the ninth inning Calgary added an insurance run, however, when Moro singled and scored on a Guarno RBI double before Mac Suzuki returned to silence Victoria in the bottom of the frame. Collecting their league-leading 40th win on the season, the Vipers completed the sweep of the Seals with a 10-8 win at Royal Athletic Park.

Reliever Brian Oliver collects the win on the afternoon for the Vipers, while Isaac Hess takes the hit for his second loss on the season. The Calgary offense was again bolstered by Colin Moro who finished 2-for-5 with 3 RBI's while Kevin Price also posted a big game for the visitors with two runs batted in.
