Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Hoping to respond after dropping the series opener against the Calgary Vipers, the Victoria Seals returned to Royal Athletic Park for game two on Wednesday night. With the visitors turning to left-hander Joe Sergent (5-3) for the start, the Seals countered with Eduardo Baeza (3-8) on the mound.
Continuing where they left off in game one, the Vipers came flying out of the gate with an RBI double from Nelson Castro after Fehlandt Lentini was hit by a pitch. Then, with the runner on second, Jorge Mejia made it 2-0 Vipers with an RBI base hit. Finding a response in the bottom half of the frame, Victoria received a double from Sergio Pedroza before Jamar Hill evened the score with his league-leading 16th long ball of the season.
The Vipers restored their two-run advantage in the top of the second, though, when a Drew Miller single set up a two-out home run for Castro, his 21st and 22nd RBI's against the Seals this season, to lift the visitors to a 4-2 lead. Calgary then added a run to their lead in the top of the fourth when Rick Guarno was hit by a pitch and later scored on a wild pitch for a 5-2 advantage.
Matching the Vipers' run in the bottom of the frame, Victoria pulled back within two runs on the back of a solo home run from Josh Arhart. But in the top half of the fifth Calgary stretched their lead to four when Colin Moro singled, followed by a walk to Raul Gonzalez and a base hit from Caonabo Cosme to load the bases, before Drew Miller drove in a pair with a two-run single up the middle.
Providing another response in the bottom of the frame was the home side, using a single from Bret LeVier along with a walk to Billy Krause to put two on for an RBI double from Wilver Perez and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Pedroza to claw back within two, a 7-5 score.
Extending their lead with an RBI double from Mejia in the sixth, the Vipers capped off their scoring in the top of the eighth when Lentini notched a lead-off double, Castro followed that with a single, Moro was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Gonzalez drew an RBI walk from Seals reliever Anthony Pluta. Before the frame was out, Cosme cashed another with a sacrifice fly for a 10-5 Calgary advantage through seven and a half innings.
Once again the Seals answered the runs put up by Calgary in the bottom of the inning when Arhart reached on a walk and Brian Rios hit a two-run blast to bring the home side within three. After a base hit from Matt Kavanaugh and a walk to Wilver Perez brought the tying run to home plate for the Seals in the bottom of the ninth, Calgary closer Mac Suzuki retired Hill, striking out the side to hand Victoria a second straight loss, a 10-7 final score.
The Seals finish off the first half of this home-and-home series with the Vipers tomorrow afternoon at Royal Athletic Park. Game time is 12:05 p.m. (PT) for the businessman's special, before both teams travel to Calgary for game one at Foothills Stadium on Friday. Tickets are still available at www.selectyourtickets.com, and the contest will also be broadcast live at www.victoriaseals.ca.
