Lubbock Cotton Kings News Release

LUBBOCK – FOX34 sports personality Vinnie Vinzetta will box ABC 28's David Collier in an exhibition match to kick off the final day of the Regional Golden Gloves on Saturday.

"He's Vinny at nine. By 10, he's history," said Collier. "I think Vinny might have the edge in the ring since, like Rocky, he's Italian. But since we are doing this where the Kings play hockey, I expect to have the fan support with the very French Canadian name of Collier."

The Regional Golden Gloves boxing tournament will be held in Lubbock Feb. 19-21 at the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum sponsored by the Lubbock Cotton Kings. Proceeds will go to the Optimist Boys & Girls Club.

"I'll give him a Texasize punch that'll have him workin' in radio for the next six months!" said Vinzetta responding to Collier.

The Golden Gloves tournament serves as a qualifying round for the National Golden Gloves Championship where amateur boxers go head to head. Divisions for everyone include a Jr. Olympic Division (ages 8-16), High School Division, College Fraternity Division, and Open Class (ages 17-34). In the Open Class there are two divisions, a Novice division (eight or less previous fights) and an Open division (more than eight fights). Each fight will consist of three one-minute rounds, and each division will receive a Regional Golden Gloves Award, as well as a Best Boxer Trophy.

Cotton Kings General Partner Mark Adams is a former Golden Gloves boxer and had the idea with his former boxing coach, Edward Hernandez to bring it to the coliseum.

"In the past, the tournament was at the civic center," said Adams. "We had the idea to bring it to the coliseum. It will be a better venue for the fans and I think the atmosphere will be amazing for three days of boxing and hopefully we can bring in more money for the Optimist Boys and Girls Club."

On the exhibition match, Adams also had an opinion. "Vinnie and David compete on a daily basis for ratings – Now it is time to see them throw down their cameras and settle this thing in the ring," said Adams.

Other awards include a Team Championship Trophy and a Sportsmanship Trophy. The Golden Gloves competition began in 1923 and was designed to help youth and promote amateur competition. A portion of profits will go towards further development of amateur boxing which encourages a positive lifestyle for today's youth.

Tickets may be purchased through the Lubbock Cotton Kings Office or through any Select-A-Seat location. For more information, please contact the Cotton Kings front office or Edward Hernandez at (806) 746-5024.
