Green Bay Rockers News Release
Battle Creek, Mich. - The Green Bay Bullfrogs and Battle Creek Bombers squared off for the third time this season on Monday night. After the Bullfrogs tied the game at two in the eighth inning, and Battle Creek tied the game at four in the eleventh inning, the Bullfrogs eventually emerged victorious in the thirteenth inning by a score of 6-5 off of a go-ahead RBI-single by Ivan Vieitez.
In the thirteenth inning, Ryan Koziol (Gulf Coast State) started things for Green Bay with a walk. He then advanced to second on a balk, setting the stage for Vieitez (Lenoir-Rhyne). Vieitez came to the plate one batter after Koziol and knocked a single that scored Koziol from second to give the Bullfrogs the lead once again, by a score of 5-4. Dane Hutcheon (Montevallo) added another run in the thirteenth inning when he scored Vieitez with a single to put the Bullfrogs ahead, 6-4.
Vieitez made his first appearance on the mound this season for the Bullfrogs in the thirteenth inning. After allowing one run to the Bombers to lower the Bullfrogs lead to 6-5, Vieitez got out of a bases loaded jam to pick up the save in the thirteenth inning.
Dan Becks (St. Edwards) threw one inning of relief and picked up the win for the Bullfrogs. Andrew Mitchell (LSU) threw three innings of relief for the Bombers and took the loss.
In the eleventh inning, the Bullfrogs took their first lead of the game. Ryan Howell (Chabot) and Koziol lead the inning off with walks, before they each advanced on a passed ball. Vieitez then came to plate with one out in the eleventh inning and hit a two-RBI single that pushed the then go-ahead runs across the plate to give the Bullfrogs a 4-2 lead.
Vieitez finished the night 2-for-3 with three RBI's, two walks, and one run scored.
The Bullfrogs scored their first two runs of the game in the eighth inning which tied the game at two. Vieitez and Hutcheon started the eighth with back-to-back walks before advancing to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Tony Brandner (No. Illinois). Mathew de la Rosa was then walked intentionally. Matt Beaty (Belmont) came up after a Dean Long (Emporia State) fielder's choice and hit a single that scored Hutcheon and de la Rosa to tie the game.
Beaty was 3-for-6 on the night with two RBI's. Only Beaty, Vieitez, and Hutcheon recorded hits for the Bullfrogs on Monday.
Roberto Baroniel (Nova Southeastern) started on the mound for the Bullfrogs, and gave up just two runs on five hits in six and two-thirds innings of work while earning a no decision.
Battle Creek scored one run a piece in both the third and seventh innings to take a 2-0 lead on Green Bay.
Battle Creek's starting pitcher, Dakota Mekkes (Michigan State) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. The no-hit bid was broken up on a Beaty single with one out in the fifth inning. Mekkes threw five innings and gave up just one hit, but walked five Bullfrogs and earned a no decision.
The Bullfrogs and Bombers return to action on Tuesday in Battle Creek for game two of their two-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM (CST) from Battle Creek.
