Vic Darensbourg Signed as Free Agent

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trapper Baseball Club announced today that left-handed pitcher Vic Darensbourg has been signed as a free agent by the Montreal Expos and has been assigned to the Trappers' roster. In addition right-handed pitcher Tim Drew was assigned outright from Montreal and right-handed pitchers Kevin Joseph and Hansel Izquierdo were released. Darensbourg and Drew will be active for tonight's game in Tacoma. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 23 players; 12 pitchers, two catchers, five infielders and four outfielders, plus three players (right-handed pitcher Jose Colon, right-handed pitcher Bo Donaldson and first baseman Luis Ortiz) on the disabled list.

Darensbourg, 32, began the season in extended spring training with the Colorado Rockies, with whom he was acquired by from the Florida Marlins along with catcher Charles Johnson, outfielder Preston Wilson and infielder Pablo Ozuna in exchange for left-handed pitcher Mike Hampton, outfielder Juan Pierre and cash considerations on November 18, 2002.

The Los Angeles, California native was transferred to Triple-A Colorado Springs on May 2 and was selected by the Rockies on May 23. Darensbourg went 0-0, 0.00 (2.1 IP - 0 ER) in three appearances with the Rockies before being sent back to Colorado Springs on June 8. He was 2-2, 3.57 (22.2 IP - 9 ER) in 20 appearances with the Sky Sox before being released on July 10. Darensbourg was originally signed by the Marlins as a non-drafted free agent on July 11, 1992. He was 1-2, 6.14 (48.1 IP - 33 ER) in 42 games with the Marlins in 2002. Darensbourg is 7-15, 4.96 (267.0 IP - 147 ER) with two saves in 274 Major League appearances and is 28-18, 3.15 (388.2 IP - 136 ER) with 32 saves in 194 appearances (25 starts) in the minors.

Drew, 24, was 0-2, 12.48 (8.2 IP - 12 ER) in six appearances (one start) with Montreal this season. He began the season with the Trappers and was selected on June 26. He is 3-8, 7.50 (78.0 IP - 65 ER) in 15 starts with Edmonton in 2003. Drew was originally selected in the first round (28th overall) of the 1997 draft by the Cleveland Indians. The Valdosta, Georgia native was acquired by Expos as the player to be named in the deal that brought right-handed pitcher Bartolo Colon to Montreal in exchange for first baseman Lee Stevens, shortstop Brandon Phillips, outfielder Grady Sizemore and left-handed pitcher Cliff Lee on June, 27, 2002. Drew split the 2002 season between three teams, going 8-4, 3.27 (96.1 IP - 35 ER) in 15 starts with Triple-A Buffalo, 6-3, 2.87 (84.2 IP - 27 ER) in 13 starts with Triple-A Ottawa and 1-0, 2.81 (16.0 IP - 5 ER) with two saves in seven appearances (one start) with the Expos. He is 1-2, 6.20 (24.2 IP - 17 ER) with two saves in 13 Major League appearances (two starts) and 55-48, 4.30 (860.2 IP - 411 ER) in 147 starts in the minor leagues.

Joseph, 26, was 1-2, 9.39 (15.1 IP - 16 ER) in seven appearances (one start) with the Trappers. He acquired from the Memphis Redbirds in exchange for right-handed pitcher Pat Collins on June 27. Joseph was 1-5, 4.37 (59.2 IP - 29 ER) in 22 appearances (five starts) with the Redbirds this season. He was originally selected by the San Francisco Giants in the sixth round of the 1997 draft. The native of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania was traded by San Francisco to St. Louis with a player to be named for left-handed pitcher Jason Christiansen on July 31, 2001. Joseph made 11 relief appearances last year with St. Louis. He went 0-1, 4.91 (11.0 IP - 6 ER) while allowing 16 hits (one home run) and six walks. Joseph was also 1-1, 1.77 (35.2 IP - 7 ER) with two saves in 31 appearances with Memphis in 2002. He owned a career minor league record of 11-30, 4.35 (358.0 IP - 173 ER) in 181 minor league appearances (28 starts) entering the season.

Izquierdo, 26, was 2-2, 7.41 (51.0 IP - 42 ER) in 17 appearances with the Trappers this season. He was transferred to the Trappers roster from Short-Season Single-A Vermont on May 16. Izquierdo began the season with Triple-A Pawtucket, where he was 0-1, 11.48 (13.1 IP - 17 ER) in four appearances (three starts). He was released on May 5, was signed as a free agent by the Montreal Expos on May 5 and was assigned to the Vermont roster. The Havana, Cuba native split the 2002 season between three teams. He was 4-5, 5.32 (71.0 IP - 42 ER) in 13 starts with Triple-A Calgary, 0-1, 1.29 (7.0 IP - 1 ER) in one start with Double-A Portland and was 2-0, 4.55 (29.2 IP - 15 ER) in 20 appearances (two starts) with the Florida Marlins. Izquierdo made his Major League debut in 2002 tossing 2.0 scoreless innings for the Marlins at Atlanta on April 21. He was released by the Marlins on October 3 and signed as a free agent with the Boston Red Sox on October 22. Izquierdo was originally selected by the Marlins in the seventh round of the 1995 draft. He entered the 2003 season with a career minor league record of 36-33 and a 4.04 ERA (571.0 IP - 256 ER) in 144 appearances (76 starts). Izquierdo played for the Cuban Junior National team in 1993 and 1994.
