Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Every goal and assist the Black Hawks recorded on Saturday came from a player with at least one year of junior hockey experience, pulling Waterloo off the mat for a 4-3 overtime win against the Dubuque Fighting Saints at Young Arena.
Defenseman Cooper Wylie completed a four-point night and won the game a 2:02 of overtime. Receiving a pass at the Dubuque blue line, he stepped in for a one-on-one chance against Philip Svedeback, beating the Boston Bruins draft pick with a shot over the netminder's right shoulder.
That goal came after a desperate finish to regulation. The Hawks trailed with under a minute remaining but were skating six-on-four thanks to a late power play and an empty net. Wylie's drive from the right point was tipped in by Michael LaStarza with just 31.7 seconds left to spare.
LaStarza's goal marked the second time Waterloo had rallied in the third period. Dubuque had taken their first lead of the night with a five-on-three power play goal from Samuel Sjolund at 4:32.
The Hawks evened it up on their next power play four-and-a-half minutes later. In that instance, Wylie's initial shot sprang out of the goalmouth to Mason Reiners waiting near the left dot. Reiners fired the puck back between the pipes for his team-leading third goal of the season. With an assist on LaStarza's subsequent goal, Reiners finished with three points.
While the game was tied 2-2, Jack Williams made two dramatic saves. The first was on Nikita Borodayenko after a neutral zone turnover with 9:41 remaining; Williams snared the forward's shot from the left circle. A little over four minutes later, he went from one side of the crease to the other, snuffing out Tristan Lemyre's stuff attempt with his left pad.
Lemyre did help the Saints retake the lead with 3:30 to go, flipping an ankle-high pass to Kenny Connors, which Connors banged inside the post to Williams' right.
The exciting third period followed a grinding second, which saw no scoring and only four combined shots on goal until a flurry of chances in the last four minutes before intermission.
Tyler Kostelecky had opened the scoring 9:28 into the game. Svedeback was sizing up a shot from the right point by Reiners when Kostelecky stepped in to tip the chance past the startled Swedish netminder at the last moment.
The Fighting Saints tied the game with just over two minutes remaining before intermission when Ryan Beck connected with Connor Kurth on a two-on-one, leaving Kurth with an open side.
Dubuque outshot the Hawks 30-26; Williams earned his third win of the season with 27 saves.
Saturday's game was the first of three straight at Young Arena. Next Friday and Saturday, the Hawks host the Lincoln Stars. The first 500 kids aged 4-12 in attendance for Friday's game will receive a Black Hawks Youth Hockey Jersey, presented by SCHEELS and Christie Door Company.
