March 16, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charlotte Independence News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Independence today announced the signing of veteran midfielder Jun Marques Davidson, pending an International Transfer Certificate (ITC). He is the seventh new player to reach agreement with the Independence this offseason and brings the current roster of contracted players to 14.
Davidson spent the 2015 season with Siam Navy FC in the Thai professional league. The midfielder appeared in 32 matches, recording one goal, as the club compiled a 10-19-5 record. One year prior, in 2014, Davidson had his second stint with the NASL's Carolina RailHawks. He collected the team MVP award after leading the club to a fifth-place finish in the league.
A native of Tokyo, Japan, Davidson moved with his family to Pasadena, Calif., in 1995, where he attended high school and played for the American Global Soccer School. The midfielder returned to Japan in 2002 and made his professional debut with Omiya Ardija of J. League Division 2. Davidson helped the team win promotion to the First Division in 2004 and remained with the club through 2006. He transferred to Albirex Niigata in 2007, and also spent time on loan at Vissel Kobe and Consadole Sapporo.
Davidson returned to the U.S. in early 2009, when he signed his first contract with the RailHawks. He helped the club win the NASL Conference Title and earn a trip to the USSF D-2 Championship Series. In 2011, the midfielder returned to the J. League Division 2 for one season before reaching a deal with Vancouver Whitecaps FC of MLS. Davidson had such a successful first year in MLS that he earned the Whitecaps' "Jock MacDonald Unsung Hero Award" for his efforts. He remained with the club for two seasons, tallying 50 appearances and one assist.
"We are delighted to bring a player of Jun's caliber and experience to Charlotte," said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. "His experience in the top league in Japan, as well as MLS, provides not only mentorship to younger players, but organization and leadership on the field. In addition, Jun provides strong professional character and mentality. On the ball he is an extraordinarily clean passer who will connect the backs and the midfield for us. He is not only excellent in possession, but able to find the right pass to get the attack started."
The Independence will open the 2016 season against Louisville City FC at Ramblewood Stadium on Saturday, March 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm ET. Tickets are available at www.charlotteindependence.com/tickets or by phone at 704-206-1515.
