San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls and veteran center Richard Keyes have agreed to terms for the 2005-06 season, head coach Martin St. Amour announced Thursday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. To make room for Keyes, the Gulls released rookie forward Brad Wanchulak.
Keyes, 30, comes to San Diego after playing last season in Germany for the Leipzig Ice Lions. In 44 games with Leipzig, he notched 51 points (26g, 25a) and 81 penalty minutes.
Now in his ninth professional season, Keyes has notched 416 career points (208g, 208a) and 486 penalty minutes in 436 games. The 5-foot-10-inch, 185-pounder from Kalamazoo, Mich. has notched 50-or-more points five times and netted 20-or-more goals six times. Keyes has registered six hat tricks during his career, while recording three-or-more points in a game 25 times.
The veteran center has also played 36 games in the International and American Hockey leagues, recording 11 points (5g, 6a). Keyes was called up to either the IHL or AHL in each of his first six pro seasons. He recorded a career-high 81 points for the Toledo Storm in 2001-02, which was eighth in the ECHL.
Keyes was teammates with former Gull John Spoltore last season with Leipzig. He will be available for San Diego starting Friday in Phoenix and will wear No. 52.
