Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- The Vermont Lake Monsters rallied from a 4-1 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extra innings, but the Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored four times in the top of the 12th inning for an 8-4 New York-Penn League victory on Thursday afternoon at historic Centennial Field.
Down three in the ninth, Vermont's Chris Iriart followed a Seth Brown leadoff walk with a two-run homer to leftfield cutting the deficit to one. A single, hit batter and one-one single loaded the bases with one out and the Lake Monsters were able to tie the game on a Richie Martin RBI groundout. Vermont had a chance to win the game in the 10th with runners on first and third with one out, but Jesus Lopez popped up a suicide squeeze bunt attempt and Mikey White was doubled off third to end the inning.
Vermont reliever Corey Miller (0-1) retired all six batters he faced in the 10th and 11th innings, but the Scrappers touched him up for four runs on five hits in the 12th inning. After back-to-back singles to open the inning and a groundout that advanced the runners to second and third, Li-Jen Chu's infield RBI single gave Mahoning Valley the lead and Austin Fisher followed with a groundball RBI single to right for a 6-4 lead. After another groundout, Daniel Salters gave the Scrappers a couple of more insurance runs with a two-run single to right to cap off the four-run inning.
Fisher was 3-for-6 with two runs and the RBI single for Mahoning Valley (6-13), which snapped a five-game losing streak with the win. Ka'ai Tom also went 3-for-6 with a run and RBI, while Chu, Salters and Mark Mathias each had two of the Scrappers 15 hits in the game. Starter Casey Shane allowed one run on two hits with no walks and five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings, while Yoiber Marquina (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings to earn the victory.
Iriart was 3-for-5 with the two-run homer, his second of the season, while Lopez and Trace Loehr both had two hits. Starter Dustin Driver allowed four runs on eight hits over four innings, while relievers John Gorman allowed one hit in two scoreless innings and Kevin Duchene one hit in three scoreless frames for the Lake Monsters. Vermont (7-12) is now 0-3 this season in extra-inning games.
The Lake Monsters and Scrappers will wrap up the series with a single-game at 7:05 pm at Centennial Field on Friday night. Gates open at 6:00 pm with the first 250 kids receiving a free piggy bank courtesy of VSAC and VHEIP.
