Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (10-9) took the second game of a three game series against the State College Spikes (9-10) by a final score of 7-2 on Thursday night.
In a game that was delayed an hour and thirteen minutes due to rain the Tigers combined stellar pitching with a hot offense to win easily and move back above .500. Spenser Watkins (2-1) got the ball for Connecticut and pitched very well. He worked five innings allowing just a single hit and a single run. Watkins entered the game ranked third in the New York-Penn League in ERA at 0.59.
Drew Smith also pitched three perfect innings out of the bullpen. Smith who pitched three innings for the second time this season struck out two during the outing.
Watkins went to the mound with a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a two-run homerun by leftfielder Christin Stewart (2-3, HR, 3 RBI). It was Stewart's second homerun of the year and his first it in three games.
State College cut the deficit in half in the second. First basemen Casey Grayson doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a groundout. The hit by Grayson was one of just two hits on the night for the Spikes. For Grayson he has now reached base in all eighteen games he has played in for State College this year.
The Tigers added two more runs in the sixth. With two outs catcher Kade Scivicque (1-4, 2 R, 2B) walked and moved to third on a double by right fielder Tanner Donnels (3-4, R). Corey Baptist was up next and he hit a hard line drive to deep right. It looked like it was going to be caught to end the inning but Spikes right fielder Thomas Spitz misplayed it allowing both runs to score making it 4-1.
Connecticut added another run in the seventh on a Stewart sacrifice fly and two additional runs in the eighth when shortstop AJ Simcox singled with two outs.
Connecticut will play State College tomorrow in the final game of the three game series. The first pitch on Friday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The Connecticut Tigers are the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play a 76 game schedule that runs from mid June through early September. 2015 season tickets, group tickets, mini plans, individual game tickets, and team merchandise are now on sale!
