July 9, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Auburn Doubledays News Release

BATAVIA, NY - Andrew Stevenson led off the game with a single to left and was later stranded on third. It was the only hit Auburn would record in the first six innings as the offense was silenced in a 4-1 loss to Batavia.

The Muckdogs didn't take too long to score. In the bottom of the first Giovanny Alfonzo singled to third and advanced to second on a throwing error by Kelvin Gutierrez. Two batters later, Brad Haynal singled to left to bring in Alfonzo and give Batavia a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, the Muckdogs made it 2-0 quickly. Eric Fisher ledoff with a triple to right. Brandon Rawe stepped up next and drove in Fisher with a single to left. An inning later in the third, Batavia added another run. Stone Garrett walked with two outs, stole second, and then scored on Haynal's second RBI single of the game.

After that, both offenses went quiet. In fact, from the final out of the top of the first until one out in the seventh, no Doubledays hitter reached base. The streak of 17-straight Auburn players retired was started by Batavia starting pitcher Justin Jacome and continued by reliever Nestor Bautista. The streak started when David Kerian struck out to end the first and ended when Kelvin Gutierrez singled into right with one out in the seventh.

In the seventh inning, the Doubledays offense began to awaken, but couldn't score. Kerian and Page were on first and second with two outs when Jakson Reetz struck out to end the threat. An inning later in the eighth, Stevenson was on third and Edwin Lora was on first with two outs, but Max Schrock grounded out to end the inning.

The Muckdogs added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth after Garrett reached on an error and advanced to third on a single from Korey Dunbar. Fisher brought in Garret with a sacrifice fly to put Batavia up 4-0.

With its back up against the wall, Auburn mounted a rally that fell just short in the ninth. With one out, Kerian singled into right. Page then brought him around to score with a double into left. Down by three with Page on second, Reetz and Randy Encarnacion struck out swinging to end the game.

Jacome's line as the Muckdogs' starter was 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, and 4 K. He was backed up by an impressive line from Bautista of 4.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K that earned him his second win of the season. Taylor Hearn made his first start with the Doubledays and took the loss. His line was 4 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, and 6 Ks. Andrew Lee was impressive out of the bullpen once again for Auburn and his line was 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, and 4 Ks.

The Doubledays look to bounce back with game two of the series at Falcon Park on Thursday July 9th. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Jefry Rodriguez (0-2, 7.07 ERA) starts for Auburn against Jordan Holloway (1-1, 3.18) for Batavia.

Wednesday's Particulars:
