Vermont Opens Final Homestand With 3-2 Win Over Tri-City

BURLINGTON, VT --- Jacob Tanis went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Seth Streich and Michael Ynoa both tossed three scoreless innings as the Vermont Lake Monsters opened their final homestand of the season with a 3-2 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats on Friday night at historic Centennial Field.

Tanis led off the second with a double and later scored on a double play after a Bruce Maxwell single had moved him to third base. Tanis, who is 8-for-16 over the last five games, led off the fourth inning with a single, moved to third on a Maxwell double and scored one out later on a Miguel Marte RBI single to left for a 2-0 lead. 

Streich allowed one hit with two walks and three strikeouts over the first three innings before giving way to Ynoa, who had allowed eight runs in just 1 1/3 innings at Tri-City on August 26th. But against the ValleyCats on Friday, Ynoa (1-4) allowed just two hits with one walk, two strikeouts and five infield popouts for his first win of the season. 

Vermont added an insurance run in the seventh as Brett Vertigan extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a two-out triple to rightcenter and scored on a fielding error by Ryan Dineen on a Chris Bostick groundball to third. That run would prove important as Tri-City scored two runs in the eighth off Stuart Pudenz on a Dan Gulbransen solo homer, Preston Tucker double and a Bostick throwing error scoring Tucker with an unearned run.

The ValleyCats got back-to-back singles off Tucker Healy and a stolen base of third to put runners on first and third with no outs in the ninth, but Healy worked out of the jam with a strikeout, shallow fly to right and a foul fly to left for his third save of the season. The win was just the second in the last eight games for Vermont against Stedler Division champion Tri-City (50-21).

Vermont (30-41) has now won three of its last four games after a nine-game losing streak and also improved to 20-13 at Centennial Field this season with the win. 

The Lake Monsters and ValleyCats will play the second of a three-game series on Saturday beginning at 6:05 pm. The first 500 fans will receive a free bobblehead of former 2010 Vermont pitcher AJ Cole courtesy of XFinity.
