Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
ONEONTA, NY --- The Vermont Expos offense came out of hibernation long enough to score a run in the top of the eighth inning to take a 1-0 lead, but then Dan Generelli gave up four runs on three hits and two walks in the bottom of the eighth to give the Oneonta Tigers a 4-1 victory in New York-Penn League action Tuesday night at Damaschke Field.
Vermont had just two base hits heading into the eighth when Brad Ditter singled to leadoff the inning. After LorvinLouisa was robbed on a great catch at the centerfield wall by Oneonta's Vince Blue, Ja'Mar Clanton worked a walk to give the Expos two runners on base in an inning for the first time.
A flyout to right by Jason Tuttle moved Ditter to third base and Larry Wayne York followed with a solid RBI base hit to leftfield to score Ditter with just the 11th run for the Expos on the 2-5 seven-game roadtrip.
But Oneonta came right back in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff single by Tony Giarratano. After Generelli was wild to first with a pickoff attempt moving Giarratano to second, Generelli was wild to the plate as he walked the next two batters to load the bases. Kelly Hunt followed with a chopper over the drawn-in infield for a two-run single to left and a 2-1 Oneonta lead.
After a sacrifice bunt and a flyout to left for the second out, Generelli (0-3) up a two-run double down the leftfield line by Andrew Graham for a 4-1 Tiger advantage.
For the second straight night it was a pitcher's duel early in the game. Oneonta starter Matt Pender, who entered the game with just 8.1 innings pitched in four appearances, limited the Expos to just two hits over the first seven innings with one walk and three strikeouts.
Brett Nyquist, making his first appearance for the Expos since June 25, tossed two perfect innings with one strikeout in a pitch count-limited start. Anthony Pearson relieved Nyquist in the third inning and allowed only two hits with three walks and five strikeouts in four innings.
With only four hits on Tuesday, the Expos offense ended the seven-game roadtrip with a .178 (41-for-230) batting average as Vermont has scored just one run in three straight games and four of the last five. The Expos have now scored 1 run in a game 13 times this season and the team average has dropped to .210 overall.
Vermont (14-47) will return to Centennial Field to see if they left their bats in their lockers and begin a three-game homestand with the Aberdeen Ironbirds, an affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, on Thursday night. The Ironbirds, owned by Cal Ripken Jr., will be making their first-ever visit to Vermont.
