Staten Island Yankees News Release
[Staten Island, NY] - Chase Wright was dominant in the Yankees' 2-1 victory, earning his first home win of the season. The southpaw went eight innings giving up just one run on three hits, striking out 12 and walking one. His eight innings pitched and 12 strikeouts were both career highs. Staten Island backed up Wright early, putting up one run in the first. Enrique Cruz hit a one-out single to center. After Edwar Gonzalez struck out, Cruz stole second and scored on a single by Jared Treadway. The IronBirds knotted the game in the top of the third when Josh McCurdy scored on a wild pitch. Nick Covarrubias provided the game winner in the bottom of the sixth. Gonzalez walked and was sacrificed to second by Treadway. Eric Duncan struck out swinging before Covarrubias drove in Gonzalez with the eventual game-winner. Mike Gardner pitched the ninth, walking one and allowing one hit, but recording his fourth save of the year. Wright improved to 3-4 with the win. Wright also got much needed defensive help, as the Yankees went errorless for just the 15th time this season. The night was also highlighted with some key defensive plays by Cruz, robbing at least two batters of hits. The NY-Penn League has an off day tomorrow. The Yankees will face the Hudson Valley Renegades at home on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
