Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

LOWELL, MA --- The rookies and the veteran helped Vermont break its eight-game losing streak.

Francisco Guzman had a two-run double, Jean Alvarez had two hits and Lorvin Louisa added a triple and two RBI as the Expos defeated the Lowell Spinners 7-2 in New York-Penn League action Friday night at LeLacheur Park for their first win since August 24th.

The Expos scored five runs on four hits in the third inning off Spinners starter Ryan Phillips as Vermont sent nine batters to the plate. Francisco Plasencia got the Expos on the scoreboard with an RBI single (team-high 45th RBI) to score Jose Contreras (team-high 41st run). After a walk to Luis Apodaca loaded the bases, Guzman drilled a two-run double to rightfield to five Vermont a 3-0 lead.

Rolando Arnedo followed with an RBI single and Louisa plated the fifth run with an RBI groundout. Phillips (6-2), who entered the game with a 1.82 ERA (12 earned runs in 59.1 innings), allowed five runs on five hits with four walks in just 2.2 innings for the loss.

Gene Yost (5-5), who had lost each of his last four starts (5.76 ERA), allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts over seven innings. It was Yost's first win in his last seven starts, dating back to a victory at Staten Island on July 25th.

The only runs that Yost allowed came in the fifth on a one-out, two-run homer by Zak Farkes, his first home run of the season. But after the homer, Yost retired eight of the last nine batters he faced (the only baserunner came on a one-out walk in sixth).

The Expos got the five-run lead right back in the top of the sixth as Arnedo was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning and scored on an RBI triple from Louisa for a 6-2 lead. Louisa scored later in the inning on a RBI fielder's choice for Contreras.

Plasencia went 2-for-3 with two walks, one run and one RBI, while Arnedo and Alvarez chipped in with two hits apiece. Jonathan Castro added a walk and scored a run as Vermont had four of the five recently added players in the lineup.

Nick Long and Nehomar Ochoa each tossed a scoreless inning as Vermont not only snapped its overall eight-game losing streak, but the Expos also snapped a 12-game road losing streak. Vermont had not won on the road since August 10th at Batavia before Friday's win at Lowell.

Vermont (22-48) will wrap up the nine-game roadtrip on Saturday at Lowell before returning home to begin a three-game homestand with the Tri-City ValleyCats on Sunday night beginning at 5:05 p.m.
