Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL - Peoria received a spotless first inning from Cardinals rehabber Drew VerHagen and a boost from Todd Lott's bat, but it was Beloit who took advantage of a late-inning burst to earn an 8-1 win in game two of the series on Wednesday night.
Right-hander Drew VerHagen, who is working his way back from a right shoulder impingement, got the start for the Chiefs and sat down the side in order in the first frame. He needed all of six pitches to finish his lone inning, rolling a pair of ground balls to go with a foul out.
Dionys Rodriguez, who was originally slated as the scheduled starter, followed VerHagen out of the bullpen and gave up a pair of runs over four innings. In the second, a bloop single down the left field line gave the visitors a 1-0 lead. Then in the third, a Marcus Chiu solo shot doubled the Sky Carp lead to 2-0.
All was quiet until Todd Lott stepped in to lead off the Chiefs half of the sixth, to which he greeted Andrew McInvale by belting the first pitch he saw 403 feet over the left field wall to slice the deficit in half, 2-1. The homer marks the third of the week for Lott, who now has clubbed eight home runs in 11 career games against Beloit.
Despite that, just like they did on Monday evening, the Sky Carp went for the jugular in the seventh, posting a crooked number that put the game out of reach. RBI knocks from Nasim Nunez and Ymanol Marinez, as well as an RBI fielder's choice from Victor Mesa Jr. all contributed to a four-run inning that made it a 6-1 ballgame.
In the ninth, Beloit tagged the Chiefs bullpen for two additional runs for good measure, solidifying an 8-1 game and their second win this week over the Chiefs.
Game three of the series is scheduled for Thursday at 6:35 with Edgar Manzo getting the nod for the Chiefs. Pat Monteverde is tabbed as the starter for Beloit.
