Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa - The Quad Cities River Bandits snapped a four-game losing streak on Wednesday, riding a pair of two-run homers off the bats of Rubendy Jaquez and Luca Tresh to top the Cedar Rapids Kernels 5-3 at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Both starters worked 5.0 innings in game two of the six-game series, but it was Kernels who got on the board first, driving in a pair of two-out runs against Charlie Neuweiler via Jake Rucker's double in the bottom of the second inning.
With seven strikeouts already, Kernels' starter Cade Povich took the Cedar Rapids' lead into the fourth, but after allowing a bloop single to Peyton Wilson, Jaquez drove his first home run of the season over the left-field wall to tie the game.
In the fifth, it was Luca Tresh taking advantage of Tyler Tolbert reaching on Yunior Severino's error and tagging Povich for another two-run shot on his eighth homer of the year to give Quad Cities a 4-2 lead.
Despite hitting a pair of batters in the bottom of the fifth, Neuweiler used one of his two double play balls to escape the innings unscathed prior to handing the ball to the bullpen.
Cedar Rapids' manager Brian Dinkelman elected to send Povich back out for the top of the sixth, but after allowing a leadoff double to Wilson, made the move to Hunter McMahon, to allowed the inherited runner to score on Dillan Shrum's RBI single that pushed the Bandits' lead to 5-2.
In the bottom half though, Harrison Beethe allowed the Kernels back on the board with a Rucker sacrifice-fly, but limited the damage to one run in his one inning of work.
Both bullpens locked in during the final third of the game, with Patrick Smith striking out the side in order for Quad Cities in the seventh before Kasey Kalich picked up his fifth save of the season, stranding a pair of base runners over his 2.0-inning performance.
Neuweiler (6-5) earned the win for the Bandits despite allowing seven base runners over 5.0 innings, while Povich (5-6) matched his season-high with 11 strikeouts and no walks, but took the loss allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits.
William Fleming (0-0, 7.20) will get the start for Quad Cities in game three of the set on Thursday against David Festa (4-0, 2.23) who takes the ball for the Kernels. First pitch at Veterans Memorial Stadium is scheduled for 6:35pm.
