Verdugo Named El Pitcher of the Week

RICHMOND, VA- The Flying Squirrels, in conjunction with the Eastern League, have announced that LHP Ryan Verdugo has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 5th. In the 24 year-olds one start during the week the left-handed starter threw a career high 8.0 innings and struck out 10 batters allowing no runs and walking just one.

Verdugo is listed in Baseball America's top-30 Giants' prospects taking the #25 spot. He currently holds the sixth spot in the Eastern League with 59 strikeouts, and seventh in ERA (2.50). Overall in the 2011 season he holds a record of 3-1 in 10 starts with 54.0 innings pitched.

Originally drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 43rd round of the 2005 June draft and then by the Giants in the 47th round in 2007 but did not sign until the Giants selected him again in the 9th round of the 2008 June Draft. Native of Pasadena, CA he recovered from Tommy John surgery in 2005 to have a successful career at Skagit College (2006-06) and LSU (2008).

The Flying Squirrels take to the road for six games June 7th-12th, stopping in for a three game series with the Portland Sea Dogs and another three game series with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. The Flying Squirrels Pregame Warm-up will begin at 6:30 for 7:00 PM games, 6:35 PM for 7:05 PM games and 1:05 PM for 1:35 PM game on Sunday on Sports Radio 910 AM and at SportsRadio910.com. The team is back at The Diamond June 14th at 7:05 PM.
