Ventura & Pino Lead WhiteWings Past Roadrunners

HARLINGEN - Leivi Ventura and Wilmer Pino combined to go 5-for-11 with eight RBI and four runs scored to lead the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings past the Edinburg Roadrunners 16-11 on Thursday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The WhiteWings (30-24) are now 15-5 against the Roadrunners (23-32) this season, needing to win two more games to clinch the season-series for the first time in franchise history. Additionally, WhiteWings manager Eddie Dennis picked up his 399th career victory.

The WhiteWings jumped on Scott Wingo (3-4) in the second. Ventura led off with a double, Gerardo Avila hit an RBI-single and Pino socked his seventh home run of the season to make it 3-0.

Robert Matlcok responded for the Roadrunners with his first home run of the season against Eric Blackwell (5-2) to make it 3-1.

With one out in the top of the fourth, Edgar Trejo singled, Gabriel Ortiz hit an RBI-triple and Brandon Decker hit an RBI-single to give the WhiteWings a 5-1 lead.

Osiel Flores hit a two-out RBI-single in the bottom of the inning to bring the Roadrunners within 5-2.

The WhiteWings put runners at first and third with nobody out in the top of the fifth. Ventura hit a grounder to short that Welington Dotel couldn't handle, allowing him to reach and a run to score. One out later, Pino hit an RBI-single, and with two outs, Ortiz hit an RBI-single to make it 8-2.

R.J. Harris got one back for the Roadrunners in the bottom of the inning with his eighth home run of the season to make it 8-3.

The WhiteWings scored three more in the top of the sixth on a two-run single by Ventura and an RBI-double by Pino to put the game out of reach.

Uo 11-5 entering the ninth, the WhiteWings scored five insurance runs. The Roadrunners scored six in the bottom of the inning to complete the scoring.

The WhiteWings and Roadrunners play game three of this four-game series on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Right-hander Luis Chirinos (3-2, 3.09) is expected to face right-hander Toro Trevino (4-2, 4.66).
