Roadrunners Outslugged by WhiteWings

EDINBURG, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners dropped the second game of their four-game series with a 16-11 loss to the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings after both teams combined for 36 hits Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium in front of 3,821.

The WhiteWings (30-24) got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning against Scott Wingo (3-4). Gerardo Avila hit an RBI single that allowed Leivi Ventura to score from second. Wilmer Pino then followed with a two-run home run giving RGV the 3-0 lead.

Robert Matlock got the Roadrunners (23-32) on the board with a solo home run, his first of the season, in the bottom of the second off of Eric Blackwell making it 3-1 Rio Grande Valley.

RGV added two more runs in the top of the fourth. Ortiz deliverd an RBI double that allowed Edgar Trejo to score from first. Brandon Decker followed with an RBI single scoring Ortiz from third extending their lead 5-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, C.J. Beatty led off with a double to left field and then after moving to third on a double play, he came into score on an RBI single by Osiel Flores making it 5-2 WhiteWings.

After the WhiteWings scored three in the top of the fifth, R.J. Harris hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth giving RGV the 8-3 advantage.

A two-run single by Ventura in the top of the sixth added to the WhiteWings lead. Pino then followed with an RBI double that scored Ventura pushing the lead to 11-3.

Derek Marshall hit a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh and then came into score on an RBI single by Harris. One out later, Beatty hit an RBI single that scored Harris that made the score 11-5 in favor of RGV.

After the WhiteWings scored five in the top of the ninth, Edinburg answered back with six runs in the bottom of the ninth with RBI singles from Marshall, Brandon Wilkerson, Beatty, Gabe Memmert, and Stantrel Smith that made it 16-11. Mickey Cassidy got the final outs giving RGV the victory.

Blackwell (5-2) picked up the win after allowing five runs on seven hits in six and two third innings pitched.

The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will play the third game of their series Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Toro Trevino (4-2) is expected to face Luis Chirinos (3-2) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
