
Nine Runs Allowed in Third Down Vipers

Leading 4-0 the Calgary Vipers (32-23) gave up nine runs in the third inning and were defeated 15-8 by the Edmonton Capitals (30-23) in the first game of a double-header featuring two seven inning games at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. After falling behind by five the Vipers got back within one run but gave up another six tallies in the sixth inning to dash any hopes of a comeback. Overall Calgary gave up 18 hits and committed three errors leading to seven unearned runs. With the loss the Vipers' lead in the North Division shrinks to one game over the Capitals.
Defensively Jonny Kaplan made the play of the season with a full speed horizontal diving catch in right field to rob Brent Metheny of extra bases. Out of the bullpen Scott Watson was solid with a scoreless two and a third innings including three strikeouts. Garret Holleran (4-6) took the loss after allowing six earned runs in two and a third innings while Rory Shortell (6-3) received the win while allowing six runs in four innings.
Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Jonny Kaplan singled, stole second base, advanced to third base on a throwing error, Wilver Perez reached on a fielding error to score Kaplan, Perez stole second base, and with two outs Chad Ehrnsberger collected a clutch run batted in single for a 2-0 lead.
The Vipers doubled their lead in the second as Bryan Burke laid down a bunt for a base hit, Garret Holleran singled, with two outs Jimmy Rohan walked to load the bases, and C.J. Ziegler doubled in two for a 4-0 score.
Edmonton responded in the third frame when Matt Rogelstad doubled, Todd Linden walked, Brent Metheny and Nick Valdez singled for RBI, Enrique Cruz reached on an error for a RBI, Carlos Duncan doubled in two, Rory Shortell singled in one, Steve Brown hit a two-run homer, Rogelstad singled, stole second base, and Linden drove in one with a base hit for a 9-4 advantage.
Calgary got a run back in the fourth inning as with two outs Kaplan was hit by a pitch and Perez doubled him home for a 9-5 score.
In the fifth the Vipers got to within one run when Ziegler was hit by a pitch, Ehrnsberger walked, Justin Tellam reached on a throwing error which also allowed Ziegler to score, while Burke and Kaplan both singled in runs for a 9-8 score.
The Capitals answered back in the sixth frame as Cruz singled, Duncan reached on a throwing error, with two outs Tom Boleska walked to load the bases, Brown drove in two with a base hit, Rogelstad singled in one, and Linden batted in two with a base knock for a 15-8 lead.
Game 2 of the double-header will be played tonight, Thursday July 21st in 30 minutes while the series concludes on Friday July 22nd at 6:30.
The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USAA Pride and the Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
