Edmonton Capitals News Release
Calgary, AB - Foothills Stadium was flooded with rain on Tuesday night, forcing the Edmonton Capitals' game with the Calgary Vipers to be cancelled, but the field was flooded with runs on Wednesday as the battle of Alberta series resumed with the Vipers winning 14-7 in a highly offensive affair.
Both teams had quick offensive starts as the Caps tallied four runs in the first two innings. Lead-off hitter and centre fielder Steve Brown was the first batter of the game and smashed a solo home run, but the Caps were easily matched by the Vipers hitters when Calgary put seven runs on the board before the third inning even started. The Caps only managed three more runs throughout the game and were unable to match the offensive output by the Vipers, who doubled their total.
Andrew Arreola started on the mound for Edmonton and only got through 1.1 innings, giving up seven runs on 10 hits. Jorge Vasquez came in next and tossed a solid 4.2 innings, only giving up one run on three hits with five strikeouts to give Edmonton the chance to equalize. David Davidson and Bartolome Fortunato also pitched for the Caps and gave up six runs between them in a combined two innings pitched.
Brown also had an RBI single in addition to his solo home run, while first baseman Brent Metheny also drove in a pair of runs. Shortstop Enrique Cruz finished the night with a pair of hits, while second baseman Matt Rogelstad swatted his third triple of the season. Leading the way for the Vipers was shortstop Wilver Perez, who went 3-for-5 with a home run and a double, four RBI and three runs scored. Third baseman and former Cap Chad Ehrnsberger also homered, as did catcher Justin Tellam.
As a result of Wednesday's defeat, Edmonton falls to 29-23 on the North American League season, putting them two games back of the first-place Vipers, who improved to 32-22 with the big win. The standings in the North Division remain tight as the Lake County Fielders (25-21) are only 1.5 games back of Edmonton.
The Caps and Vipers continue their lengthy battle on Thursday with a double-header to make up for the rain-out on Tuesday. The provincial rivals play one more game Friday and then finally part ways, with the Caps returning home to TELUS Field on Saturday to open a three-game series against the Chico Outlaws running Saturday at 7pm, Sunday at 2pm and Tuesday at 7pm.
ROSTER MOVE: The Caps also added right-handed pitcher J.J. Whetsel to their staff on Wednesday, picking up the hurler from the Vipers. Whetsel was 1-1 with a 6.85 ERA in 22.1 innings pitched with Calgary to start the season. The Caps placed starter Alexander Francisco on the inactive list to make room for their new addition.
The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Season seats start at less than $9 per seat. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
