ValleyCats win two in Vermont

BURLINGTON, VT-The Tri-City ValleyCats swept a doubleheader against the Vermont Expos 3-0 in game one and 3-1 in the nightcap. In game one, the ValleyCats made up their August 16th rainout at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. The ValleyCats were the home team in game one and swept the twin-bill because of timely early hitting.

The ValleyCats earned an early lead in both games of the doubleheader. In game one, The 'Cats knocked Vermont starter Nehomar Ochoa out of the game in the first inning. With one out, Jonny Ash singled and Ben Zobrist doubled. Runners were at second and third for Mario Garza. He knocked in his first RBI in 12 games with an RBI single. Ash scored and the ValleyCats had a 1-0 lead. Zobrist moved up to third base on the play and scored on a Kevin Vital sacrifice fly.

Tri-City got another insurance run in the sixth inning and Andrew Alvarado picked up his second win of the season. Alvarado pitched five scoreless innings, Rodrigo Escobar came on for the last two innings to pick up his fifth save.

In game two, the ValleyCats scored three runs off Expos starter Jim Henderson. Henderson, who gave up eight runs in two previous outings against Tri-City, started a little shaky. Drew Sutton led off the game with a single. Jonny Ash flew out to centerfield. Then Ben Zobrist walked and Sutton went to second base. Garza hit an RBI single that knocked in Sutton. Hunter Pence then stepped up to the plate and hit an RBI groundout to short. Zobrist scored and it was 2-0.

Francisco Caraballo then smacked a single that brought home Garza. The ValleyCats had an early 3-0 lead.

Raymar Diaz pitched five outstanding innings. He yielded one hit in the first four innings. In the fifth inning, he got a little roughed up. David Travis led off the inning with a solo home run. The Expos got the tying runs in scoring position before Raymar Diaz worked out of the jam.

Casey Brown pitched the sixth and seventh innings to get his fourth save of the season.

The ValleyCats and Spinners begin a three game series tomorrow night at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. Game time is set for 7:00 and the game can be heard beginning at 6:40 on AM 1160 WABY and AM 900 WUAM Saratoga Springs as well as on the Internet at sportsjuice.com.
