New Jersey Cardinals News Release
Today at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey, the St. Louis Cardinals and New Jersey Cardinals announced the extension of the Player Development Contract (PDC) between the two organizations. The two-year extension ensures that the two will be affiliated through at least the 2006 season.
St. Louis has been the parent club for the New Jersey Cardinals since the team moved to New Jersey in 1994. Prior to that season, St. Louis has had a New York Penn League affiliate since 1987 when the franchise was located in Erie, Pennsylvania. Before finally settling in New Jersey, the team played in Hamilton, Ontario and Glens Falls, New York.
The New Jersey Cardinals have the second longest running affiliation in the St. Louis organization, trailing only the Johnson City Cardinals (1975) of the Appalachian League (Rookie). In the NY-Penn League, the Cardinals also have the second longest running affiliation, trailing the Batavia Muckdogs, who have been with the Philadelphia Phillies since 1988. The Vermont Expos have also been affiliated with the Montreal Expos since 1994.
The Cardinals are back in action tonight as they take on the Williamsport Crosscutters (Pittsburgh Pirates) in the final game of a 5-game set. Following the game, a massive fireworks extravaganza, sponsored by Condit Toyota, Toyota Motors USA and The Star Ledger, will take place. Tomorrow night, the first-place Brooklyn Cyclones pay a visit to Skylands Park as the Cards try to gain ground on the division leader. First pitch is set for 5:00 pm. Phils Ford sponsors a baseball giveaway and post-game is Family Catch on the Field. Sunday the Cardinals travel to Brooklyn, and Monday the two teams return to Skylands Park for their final meeting of the season. KFC and the New Jersey Herald sponsor Kids Eat Free.
