
Expos sweep doubleheader

BURLINGTON, VT --- Tri-City scored multi-runs in the first inning of both games as the ValleyCats swept a doubleheader 3-0 and 3-1 from the Vermont Expos in New York-Penn League action Friday night at Centennial Field.
The opener was a makeup of a game postponed at Tri-City this past Monday, making the ValleyCats the home team in the first game Friday. They felt right at home as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning off Expos starter Nehomar Ochoa (0-2) to take a quick 2-0 lead on a Mario Garza had an RBI single and Kevin Vital a sacrifice fly.
Andrew Alvarado (2-3) allowed four hits with four walks and five strikeouts over five innings for the win, while Rodrigo Escobar tossed two hitless innings for his fifth save. Luke Barganier gave the ValleyCats their third run with an RBI single in the sixth.
Tri-City turned the trick again in the second game as they scored all three of their runs in the top of the first inning on three hits and a walk off Vermont starter Jim Henderson (2-5). Garza and Francisco Caraballo both had RBI singles sandwiched around an RBI groundout from Hunter Pence.
Raymar Diaz (5-5) allowed just one run on two hits with three walks and six strikeouts in five innings to take the game two victory, while Casey Brown gave up one hit and struckout three over two innings for his fourth save.
The Expos were able to muster just one run and seven total hits in the two games. Vermont's only run over the 14 innings came in the bottom of the fifth inning of game two on a solo home run from David Travis.
Vermont (26-30) head to Oneonta for a three-game series before returning to Centennial Field for a seven-game homestand starting on Tuesday. The Expos will host the Auburn Doubledays (best record in the New York-Penn League) for three games and Stedler Division-leading Tri-City for four games.
