Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

POMONA, NY - Following back-and-forth affairs in each of their first two road contests of the weekend, the Tri-City ValleyCats (47-42) converted offensive opportunities to take a 6-3 victory over the New York Boulders (39-50) Sunday evening at Palisades Credit Union Park. The win allowed the 'Cats to remain tied with Equipe Quebec in the race for the Atlantic Division crown with just seven games remaining in the 2021 Regular Season.

Competing in their second-to-last road series of the year, Tri-City gained a 2-1 advantage on the weekend by launching three home runs and becoming the first team in club history to eclipse 100 long balls in a single season. Returning 'Cat Zach Biermann got the visitors on the board with a two-run shot in the top of the second, while Luis Roman launched his fourth of the season in the top of the fifth. After New York used an RBI single to get on the board in the home half of the fifth, an RBI single from Carson McCusker and a two-run homer from Connor Lien further extended the lead for the 'Cats in the seventh. New York's offense put together an unsuccessful comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single and a passed ball scoring a pair, and had the potential game-tying run on-deck when the game ended.

The offensive success was carried by another stellar performance from right-hander Jose Cruz (3-1) on the mound, with the 'Cats' starter striking out five and walking one while allowing just one earned run on six hits in five and two-thirds innings. Lefty Patrick Murphy gave up only a pair of hits in two and one-third innings to move the latter innings along and pave the way for closer Trey Cochran-Gill to pitch the final inning in a non-save situation. Andrew Hammond (4-3) took the loss for the Boulders by allowing three earned runs on as many hits in five innings, while Biermann's multi-hit night steadied the victors offensively, despite Tri-City being out-hit by the home team.

The ValleyCats will look for the four-game series victory and a chance to regain first place in the Atlantic Division on Monday, September 6 in a Labor Day primetime affair at 7:00 PM. The 'Cats' final regular season home series of the year will kick off on Tuesday September 7 against the Sussex County Miners at 6:30 PM. It will be Bark in the Park presented by Pinnacle Roofing Inc. at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.
