ValleyCats win riding their 'Four Horsemen'

Burlington, VT- The Tri-City ValleyCats used four pitchers to hold Vermont to just one hit in a 2-1 win over the Expos before 2,717 at Centenniel Field. The ValleyCats are the first team in the NY-Penn. League with ten wins and come home for a four game series with a 10-3 record.

Raymar Diaz, Paul Estrada, Chad Reineke, and Rodrigo Escobar held the Expos helpless with ten strikeouts on the evening.

Vermont struck first in the bottom of the first inning off ValleyCats starter Raymar Diaz. Doug Vroman walked then Ofilio Castro sent a base hit through the right side of the infield on a hit-and-run. Vroman went to third base. When Marvin Lowrance grounded out into a double play, Vroman scored to make it 1-0.

The ValleyCats waited until the fourth inning to do their damage. Francisco Caraballo led off and poked a solo home run over the left centerfield wall. The game was tied at 1-1 and it took only one batter before the ValleyCats took the first step towards taking the lead. Lou Santangelo grounded out then Chris Clark singled. He moved to second on a groundout by Barganier.

Wilner Alvarez, in the number nine spot, hit a flyball to leftfield that Marvin Lowrance camped under and dropped. On the play, Clark came around and scored to make it 2-1.

Paul Estrada came on to relieve Estrada in the sixth inning and struck out four in two innings. Then Chad Reineke came in for the eighth inning. He struck out the side in the eight despite walking two batters. When he put one Expo on due with a free pass in the ninth inning, 'Cats skipper Gregg Langbehn called on Rodrigo Escobar. The Columbia native retired the next three in order to give Tri-City the win.

These same two teams start a two game series tomorrow night in Troy. Ryan McKeller gets the start for the ValleyCats. Game time is 7:00 from Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.
