Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

Burlington, VT- There was no hero in the Expos lineup on Wednesday as four Tri-City pitchers combined to play the villain on a one-hitter in the ValleyCats 2-1 victory over Vermont in New York-Penn League action on "Super Hero" Night at Centennial Field. The Expos got their only hit of the game in the first inning as Ofilio Castro singled to right field to move Doug Vroman, who had walked, over to third base. Vroman then scored when Marvin Lowrance grounded into a double play. Vermont had only five more baserunners the rest of the game, all coming on walks. Their best chances to score came in the eighth and ninth innings. They got a pair of runners on with back-to-back one-out walks in the eighth, but a strikeout and popout ended the rally. Then they got the leadoff batter on with a walk in the ninth, but Rodrigo Escobar came on The ValleyCats scored both of their runs in the fourth inning to take the 2-1 lead. Francisco Caraballo led off the fourth with his third home run of the season and Wilner Alvarez gave Tri-City the lead with a two-out RBI single to score Chris Clark. Raymar Diaz (2-1) gave up the run and hit to the Expos in five innings of work, while Paul Estrada struckout four in two innings of relief. Diaz, Estrada and Chad Reineke combined at one point to retire 14 straight Expos batters from the third inning until the two-out walks in the eighth. Vermont starter Steven Cook (1-0), making his first appearance for the Expos since being promoted from the Gulf Coast League, allowed two runs on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts over five innings to take the loss. It was the first time since the Expos were no-hit by Staten Island's Jason Arnold on July 27, 2001 that Vermont was held to one or fewer hits in a game at Centennial Field. The Expos, who won three of the five games on the homestand, head on the road for a seven-game roadtrip with two games at Tri-City, two at Oneonta and three at Mahoning Valley. Vermont returns home to Centennial Field for a three-game series with Oneonta July 9-11.
