Lowell, MA- The Tri-City ValleyCats beat the Lowell Spinners 8-1 in the first of a two game series at LeLachleur Park. After losing the last game of the Staten Island series at home a week ago, Tri-City has now won four in a row.
The ValleyCats got out in front earlier in the game. With one out in the first inning, Jonny Ash singled and advanced to second on a Ben Zobrist base knock. Mario Garza stepped up to the plate and hit an RBI single to right-centerfield to bring home Ash for the early 1-0 lead.
Tri-City added a run in the second inning and in the third, the 'Cats sent eight men up to the plate. Zobrist and Garza each singled and Hunter Pence walked. The bases were juiced for Kevin Vital. He struck out. Then Francisco Caraballo hit a bases clearing double. Caraballo would come on to score on a James Cooper double. The ValleyCats had a 6-0 lead after three innings.
In the home half of the third inning, ValleyCats starter Evan Englebrook struggled. He walked the bases loaded before getting out of the jam because Matt Ciaramella grounded into a double play. He would go on to pitch five innings of scoreless baseball while allowing two hits and striking out six Spinners.
Jonny Ash scored another run for Tri-City in the fourth inning when he singled, advanced around the bases on a single and a groundout, and scored on a past ball by Mike James. With two outs in the fifth inning, James Cooper belted his first home run of the year over the leftfield wall to increase the lead to 8-0.
The series continues tomorrow night in LeLachleur Park. Raymar Diaz gets the ball for Tri-City. Game time is set for 7:00. The game can be heard in the Capital Region starting at 6:45 on AM 1160 WABY Mechanicville and AM 900 WUAM Saratoga Springs as well as on the internet at sportsjuice.com.
