Oneonta, NY- The Tri-City ValleyCats won their second game in a row over the Oneonta Tigers with a 6-4 victory before 515 at Damaschke Field.
The ValleyCats jumped out to the early 4-0 lead in the first inning. Drew Sutton led off with a bloop base hit to short left-center that he stretched into a double. Jonny Ash proceeded to fly out to centerfield, pushing Sutton to third and then Ben Zobrist worked a walk. Runners were at the corners when home plate umpire Tom Clarke called a balk against Tigers hurler Lavon Lewis. The right-hander faked a throw to third base and did not follow through with his motion to first. Zobrist advanced to second as Sutton trotted home with the first run of the game. Then Mario Garza swung and missed and the ball got by the catcher Dusty Ryan. Garza reached first base. Runners were at the corners once again. Chris Clark popped out to second base for the second out.
Lance Koenig followed with an RBI single to left. Garza went to third base. After Hunter Pence walked, the table was set for Edgar Babilonia. He blooped a first pitch by Lewis into right field for a two run single. Garza and Koenig scored to round out the scoring at 4-0. The ValleyCats sent nine men to the plate in the inning.
The Tigers got one back immediately in the bottom of the first with leadoff man Brooks Colvin smacking an Andrew Alvarado pitch over the leftfield wall. Alvarado responded by getting the next two Tigers out on a grand total of two pitches. The California native needed just four pitches to get out of the inning. The score was 4-1 after one inning.
Tri-City padded their lead in the second inning. With two outs, Ben Zobrist walked. Mario Garza drove him in with a double that put the ValleyCats ahead 5-1. In the third inning, the 'Cats scored another run. Lance Koenig led off with a single and came around to score when Hunter Pence hit a double and earned his first professional RBI.
Andrew Alvarado gave up a run to the Tigers in the third and fourth innings and finished his second professional start after tossing four innings. Bo Edmiston followed by giving up a run in two innings, Chad Reineke struck out two in a scoreless seventh, and Paul Estrada finished up the eighth and ninth innings for his fourth save. The Tigers did score a run in the ninth inning when Octavio Amezquita hit a run-scoring single off of Estrada.
The three game series finishes up tomorrow night at 7:00 in Oneonta. ValleyCat hurler Ronnie Martinez gets the call for his sixth start of the season.
