Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY - The Tri-City ValleyCats suffered a 10-4 loss to the State College Spikes thanks to some late offense by the Spikes. Sam Tewes picked up the win for the Spikes, while Colin McKee suffered the loss for the 'Cats.
The scoring began early with another home run from the New York-Penn League co-leader in home runs, Jake Adams. Adams hit a two run blast to give the 'Cats and starter Kristopher Scheetz an early lead.
The Spikes were able to get one run off Scheetz on an Evan Mendoza RBI single. Scheetz made his ValleyCats debut after beginning the year with the GCL Astros, and pitched four innings, allowing just three hits and striking out two.
Colin McKee would come on in relief and allow a Zach Kirtley solo home run in the fifth inning, which tied the game at 2-2. McKee would struggle with command in the sixth inning, allowing the runner to score from first base on three wild pitches to make it 3-2. Brandon Benson put the game out of reach at the end of the inning with his own two run home run to make it 5-2.
After two bases loaded walks by 'Cats pitcher Ben Smith, Scott Hurst would add to the lead on a deep three run triple to make it 10-2. Jacob Meyers would leg out an RBI single in the ninth inning that scored two and brought the 'Cats closer but ultimately not close enough.
Sam Tewes provided yet another lengthy start for the Spikes, going seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out one. After that, Will Latcham and Robbie Gordon pitched two innings to secure the victory.
The 'Cats will host the Spikes for the finale of the three game series at 7:00 pm. It's Community Heroes/Superhero Night, presented by Community Resource Federal Credit Union! You can purchase your tickets at tcvalleycats.com/tickets.
