Cyclones Squander Four Run Lead, Fall in Extras

Niles, OH - July 12, 2017 - The Cyclones blew a four run lead en route to a 5-4 extra inning loss at the hands of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Wednesday night. Brooklyn managed just two hits after the third inning as they fell in 10 innings.

After a scoreless first inning Brooklyn used a two-out rally in the top of the second to jump out to an early lead. With Walter Rasquin on second, Jose Maria got things started with an RBI double to left field and would later score on a single from Carlos Sanchez to give Brooklyn a 2-0 advantage.

That lead would balloon an inning later thanks to an RBI single from Jose Medina, that scored Reed Gamache and an RBI groundout from Ricardo Cespedes that gave the Cyclones a 4-0 edge.

With Jake Simon cruising on the mound, that lead seemed like more than enough. The southpaw allowed just a single unearned run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts over his 5.0 solid frames before turning the ball over to the Cyclones bullpen. Cannon Chadwick was the first Brooklyn reliever to enter and the righthander tossed 2.0 shutout innings and left the game with the Cyclones ahead 4-1 in the eighth.

But it would be in the eighth when the Scrappers would start their comeback. Tony Dibrell's early season struggles continued as he allowed a solo home run in the eighth, and another in the ninth as Mahoning Valley trimmed the deficit to 4-3. Dibrell has now allowed four home runs in his 4.0 innings on the mound this season. Gregorix Esetevez entered the game in relief of Dibrell with the tying run on first base and nobody out. The righthdander quickly moved the runner into scoring position with an errant pickoff throw and, after recording a strikeout, a wild pitch moved Tyler Friis to third. After a walk of Austin Wade put runners on the corners, it seemed like Brooklyn might be able to escape with a win when Samad Taylor hit a ground ball to shortstop. But the Cyclones were unable to turn the double play and Mahoning Valley tied the game at 4-4 and sent the game to extra frames.

In the top of the tenth, Brooklyn appeared like they might be able to quickly regain the lead when Franklin Correa led off the frame with a triple and was followed by a walk of Leon Byrd that put runners on the corners with nobody out. But Reed Gamache grounded out and was later picked off first, before Quinn Brodey struck out looking to end the threat.

In the bottom of the frame the Scrappers completed their comeback, again thanks to Cyclones miscues. With Jesse Berardi on first with one out, Jason Rodriguez hit a double into the left field corner and Berardi tried to score the game-winning run all the way from first. Franklin Correa fired a perfect strike on his relay throw to the plate by catcher Carlos Sanchez dropped the throw allowing the winning run to score as the Scrappers walked off with a 5-4 win.

The loss dropped the Cyclones to 6-16 on the season, marking the first time in franchise history the team has ever been 10 games under .500. The Cyclones will look to salvage the series finale on Thursday night when they send Jose Carlos Medina to the mound. The team will return to Brooklyn to open up a six-game homestand on Friday night at MCU Park.
