Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER Vt. - After a key win against Upper Valley, the Mountaineers suffered a bitter defeat on Friday night after being shutout 7-0 by the Valley Blue Sox at historic Montpelier Recreation Field in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.
Still seeking a playoff spot, the Mountaineers had a slow start in the first inning after allowing four runs on five hits. Offensively, Vermont was left looking to break through Valley's defense at the end of the first.
Trailing by five, the Mountaineers looked to put some runs up on the board in the second inning. Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) was able to get the first hit of the night for Vermont with a single to right field, but the offense could not capitalize, ending the second inning with a score of 5-0.
Andrew Mundy (Lake Grove, N.Y. / Hofstra University) kept the Blue Sox bats at bay in the third with some help from the defense as the Mountaineer bats looked to gain some ground. Sean Flaherty (Orangeburg, N.Y. / Hofstra University) got things started with a single to left field in the third, followed by an infield single from second baseman Matt McDermott (Little Falls, N.J. / College of William & Mary), but the Mountaineers stranded both runners after a fly out ended the inning.
After two more insurance runs from the Valley offense in the fourth, Vermont had runners on the corners after a pair of walks. A nice play at third ended the threat against the Blue Sox as the shutout was held through four full innings.
Mitchell Sorenson (Westlake, Ohio / Lake Erie College) staved off the Blue Sox in the top of the fifth with three strikeouts after allowing just one walk in the inning. Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va./ Hofstra University) got his first hit of the night in the bottom of the fifth. After another single from McDermott, Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa. / Penn State University) loaded the bases with a solid single the outfield. However, an inning ending double play helped Valley escape the jam with no harm.
After a few scoreless innings, with Vermont relief pitchers allowing just two hits, the Mountaineers looked to catch up in the eighth inning but to no avail as Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass. / University of Massachusetts Lowell) had the only hit with a double to left field. After a walk, Riley Sorensen retired the next six batters he faced, helping Valley hold onto the win.
Sean Kealey (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Allegheny College) suffered a loss tonight after two innings pitched, allowing seven hits and five runs while Valley starter, Kevin Gould, claimed the win, with seven innings pitched, allowing eight hits and no runs. The Vermont Mountaineers don't play until Tuesday, July 30th at home against Winnipesaukee at 6:30 p.m. The 2019 NECBL All-Star festivities are on Sunday, July 28th with the public being allowed to watch the events starting at 3:30 p.m. at Montpelier Recreation Field.
