Kirklin, Haskin Win 2019 NECBL Fan Vote
July 26, 2019 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - After accumulating the most votes in their respective divisions over the course of a hotly contested four-day period, North Adams outfielder Tre Kirklin (Jacksonville State) and Newport outfielder Hudson Haskin (Tulane) have been named the winners of the 2019 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) All-Star Game Fan Vote, the league announced Friday morning.
Kirklin, a rising senior at Jacksonville State, and Haskin, a rising sophomore at Tulane, will both lace up for this Sunday's NECBL All-Star Game, which will be hosted by the Vermont Mountaineers at Montpelier Recreation Field, with festivities beginning at approximately 3:15 p.m. For more information on the NECBL All-Star Game, including an updates itinerary, head to ASG19.NECBL.com!
Now in its fifth year, the NECBL Fan Vote gave the league's innumerous fans a chance for their voices to be heard; after the initial 29-player rosters were unveiled last Sunday for both the North and South Divisions, each team nominated one of their players not selected to the All-Star Game roster, and the recipient of the most votes from each division would be added to Sunday's roster.
The voting opened on Monday at midnight and ended Thursday night at midnight, giving fans exactly four days to cast their votes. Both Newport and North Adams claimed their first respective fan vote winners in what was the most popular turnout yet for fans of all 13 New England League organizations. Kirklin had more than 1,200 more votes than the next-closest player, while Newport had nearly 1,000 more than the second-place finisher in the south.
Winnipesaukee (2), New Bedford (2), Keene (1) and Vermont (1) have won the other Fan Vote contests over the past five years.
A Kennesaw, Georgia, native, Kirklin has played in 30 games for the North Division-leading SteepleCats. One of the fastest players in the league this summer, he has 19 stolen bases on 20 tries, ranking in the top-five in the league in swiped bags. He is batting .314 on 27 hits and has been a true offensive catalyst with 20 runs scored. Kirklin also has four doubles, at triple and a homer while driving in 12 runs and drawing 10 walks. He owns a .404 on-base percentage and a .823 OPS. The rising senior at Jacksonville State batted .272 this past spring with 43 runs scored and 30 RBIs while helping the Gamecocks reach the NCAA Regionals.
A Pealm Beach Gardens, Florida, native, Haskin has been another regular for the Gulls, who are in the thick of an equally entertaining NECBL Southern Division race that is entering the home stretch. His two triples are tied for the league lead while he is batting .321 overall on 35 hits. He also sports 20 runs, two doubles, five homers and 22 RBIs to his resume; he, too, is a speedster with 17 stolen bases on 20 tries. He owns a .514 slugging percentage and .865 OPS. He broke through as a rookie with Tulane this past spring, earning Freshman All-America honors from two publications and was named a Baseball America Second Team All-American, as well.
The NECBL congratulates Kirklin and Haskin, as well as the North Adams and Newport organizations, and thanks the thousands of fans who participated in this year's All-Star Game Fan Vote!
