
Vail, Spits Prevail Over Majors

With the game tied late in the third period, Brady Vail went to work.
Windsor's second-year centre scored the game-winning goal on a 2-on-1 with 49 seconds to play, before setting up Kerby Rychel for an insurance marker just 11 seconds later, as the Spits beat Mississauga 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at the WFCU Centre.
Rychel had a pair of goals, giving him an impressive 32 on the season, and Jaroslav Pavelka made 39 saves for the win.
Ben Johnson and Zack MacQueen had the other goals for the Spitfires (23-24-3-2), who moved within two points of Saginaw and Owen Sound for fifth place in the Western Conference.
The victory gave the Spits four of a possible six points in a gruelling weekend that featured stops in Owen Sound and Plymouth.
Johnson's 12th of the season gave the home side its first lead of the afternoon on the power play at 18:30 of the second period.
Kristoff Kontos knotted things at 3-3 with his 14th, at 8:47 of the third.
The game looked headed for overtime. But Vail scooped up a loose puck at centre ice and busted into the Mississauga zone before beating Brandon Maxwell high to the glove side at 19:11.
Off the ensuing faceoff, Posa found Vail, who held on and fed Rychel to round out the scoring, sending the a crowd of 6,067 in to a frenzy.
