Majors Complete Lost Weekend

February 6, 2012 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

It certainly was far from a super weekend for the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors on Super Bowl weekend.

Former Major Kerby Rychel scored twice and added an assist and Brady Vail scored the game-winner with just 49 seconds to play as the Windsor Spitfires edged the Majors 5-3 in Ontario Hockey League play Sunday afternoon, handing the Majors their third loss in as many days this weekend.

Vail added an assist to his goal and Ben Johnson and Zack McQueen added the other goals for the Spitfires, who are locked in a fierce battle for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Jaroslav Pavelka made 39 saves in goal for the Spitfires, who were out-shot 42-31 by the Majors, including 17-7 in the second period.

Kristoff Kontos and Jamie Wise both had a goal and an assist for the Majors, while Mika Partanen scored the other goal for Mississauga (22-23-1-5). With the Oshawa Generals winning 4-2 at home against Guelph, the Majors slipped to eighth in the East, just one point ahead of the ninth place Belleville Bulls.

Spencer Martin started for the Majors and allowed three goals over two periods with 14 saves. Brandon Maxwell stopped 12 of the 14 shots he faced in his period.

The Majors started quickly thanks to the power play, scoring twice early in the first period, both of them coming with Mississauga on the man advantage.

Partanen opened the scoring at 5:42 and Wise followed with his 19th goal of the season 1:10 later to give the Majors the early lead, but it was Rychel who responded to get the Spitfires on the board at 17:26 to make it 2-1 Majors after 20 minutes.

Windsor took the lead in the second period despite being out-shot 17-7. MacQueen scored at 11:52 and Johnson tallied on the power play at 18:30 to put the Spitfires up by one after two periods.

Kontos tied the game at 8:47 with his 14th goal of the year, but goals by Vail at 19:11 and an empty netter by Rychel 12 seconds later gave Windsor the win.

Mississauga was 2-for-6 on the power play while Windsor went 1-for-3 with the extra man before 6,067 fans.

The Majors are in St. Catharines to face the Niagara IceDogs on Thursday and host the Oshawa Generals on Paint The Rink Pink V Night at the Hershey Centre on Friday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m.
